Hi Hap,

-> Much better than I thought. AFAIK, very few public schools let you
pick -> your own sub. Most of then, when you let them know you need a
sub, just -> start dialing down the list until one agrees to come in. My
dad did sub -> work one time--got called for anything from Home Ec to
English. In the -> latter, the teacher had given the kids a list of
vocab words & meanings; -> trouble is, the meanings were completly
unrelated to the word. He -> taught them how to use a dictionary to
look up the proper meaning. -> IIRC, there were quite a few misspellings
in the list as well. hn> -> hn> It's good that Anne's disctrict has a

she often will call them at home to see if they are hn> available

Sounds like a good idea. If I were to sign on as a sub, I'd want to do
it tha way--for a specific teacher/school.

before she goes online to arrange for a hn> sub. As for the english
teacher your dad subbed for, hn> it's folks like that staying in the
profession that give hn> teaching a bad rap.

Very much so! He was the son of one of the local doctors--thought he
was big stuff when he was in hgh school, then came back home to teach.
I know one of my sisters had him, don't know if the other one and my
younger brother did as well. I didn't, but one of the ones I did have
didn't seem to be too well equipped to teach high school. She would
have done better at the middle school level.

-> hn> of kids who range from very gifted but with no social
-> hn> skills whatever to Autistic, and ADHD to such an extreme
->  hn> that it's tough to hold a conversation with the kid! I don't

-> That is quite a range of kids to work with. Are there classroom aides
-> to help? I hope so; it sounds like she really has to fine tune IEPs for
-> the kids. Back when we went to school, there were no IEPs for most
-> classes, probably only the special needs one. In the others, it was sink

hn> IEP's are a relatively new invention, when "mainstreaming"
hn> became popular back in the late 80's and early 90's. Now it's

I'd never heard of them until Rachel started taking education courses.
Even when I was in college & knew a lot of those in the teaching
programs, they were not in use.

hn> used more as a matter of budget control than as a real
hn> benefit to the student. When Anne was a special ed teacher
hn> she was up to her ears in em, now she's on the committee for
hn> those in her class who are on IEP's but doesn't have to do all
hn> the drafting and design work she did before.

That's a help! But she can read one, know what is expected of the
student and if the student is meeting those expectations--if the teacher
writes a coherent IEP, that is. (G)

-> Good, primary care doctors can have a lot of influence if needs be and
-> if they are strong enough advocates. Sounds like you have a good one.

hn> He is good, and very knowledgeable about just
hn> about everything...and he knows all the local
hn> doctors as well...and tells her which ones
hn> to go to for the best information and treatment.

Sounds like one I'd like to have if we ever move out that way.

-> That doesn't sound like fun! Do something extra special for her
-> tonight, maybe another candy bar?

hn> The shot itself won't be fun (coming up this week) but
hn> the projected results are. If it does what they hope
hn> it will do, (a series of three shots will follow) she'll
hn> be really on her way "out of the woods" on this
hn> problem. (we are keeping our fingers crossed!!)

Hope and pray that it is. Meanwhile, watch the back--careful on bending
down to kid level, no major gardening work and so forth.

->  hn> I'm more realistic with Cancer.

-> With that one in particular, realistic is the better way to go, even if
-> it's the harder one. But, hope and pray; miracles do happen.

hn> Yep, they do...but you can't count on
 hn> getting one.

I know.

->  hn> I am moving around...but it's tough
-> hn> to sleep at night because that's when
-> hn> it decides to really start throbbing!

-> I know the feeling, all too well. Then if it's a pain killer you need
-> to take with food, you have to be careful not to eat so much you can't
-> sleep because of that. I went to the doctor today as a follow on for a
-> couple of med changes we made last month. Going to keep up with them
-> which means a light munchie before bed time still. A lot of times I'll
-> grab a small cup of yogurt.

hn> I'm trying to figure out a way to
hn> work it so I don't have to gobble
hn> pills. So far I'm still exploring options,
hn> most of them don't work as well as
 hn> the meds,....but I'm hoping!

I'm trying a few things too. Change in diet--pushing a bit more soy
based calcium (chcolate Silk soy milk) is a bit of a help. Doing
cooking that doesn't involve lots of stirring helps the wrists, as does
making things without lots of chop-chop prep work. I do those more
often than I should for the wrist's sake but the taste makes the pain
(sort of) worth it.
