Ärende: HEATING UP THE KITCH00421
=================================
Hi Glen,

GJ> sensation on my face and neck. Although my stove is not completely
GJ> pristine, 99% of the scunge has been removed, and I can see through
 GJ> the door window.

RH> So, now your oven is clean and you can see what's baking. Good going!

GJ> It helped that the cover glass over the oven light is also clean now.

That would be a bit of a help there. It wasn't the bulb going dim;
rather the cover for it was getting dirtier with each use of the oven.

RH> How long will that last? I've gotten to the point, with my asthma,

GJ> I have tried other cleaning agents, but that was the first successful
GJ> clean in nearly 20 years. I think that, having done it once, I will
 GJ> repeat more frequently.

It's a whole lot safer to have a clean oven than a dirty one too. We've
not lived anywhere over 8 years so none of my ovens have gotten as dirty
as yours. The longest in any one place was in AZ; that was about 6
weeks short of 8 years. Shortest time would be the 2 months in
temporary housing there, followed by the 3 1/2 months in San Angelo, TX.
But starting from when we left Berlin in July of 92, whenever we moved,
we paid someone to do the final cleaning, including the oven. Made
things just that one bit less stressful on us. Anywhere we lived longer
than 6 months (after Berlin) and the oven would have had at least one
cleaning before we moved. Of course the longer we stayed anywhere, the
more the oven was cleaned.

RH> that I refuse to use anything but the no fume stuff if I'm the one
RH> cleaning the oven. Until we move from here, I don't have that job--the
RH> oven will clean itself. (G)

 GJ> Lucky you!

It's a definate help to my breathing. BTW, did you know you could clean
the oven racks easily? Spray them with the oven cleaner or put a cup of
ammonia in a plastic trash bag & add the racks. (DON'T USE BOTH THE
CLEANER AND AMMONIA, ONE OR THE OTHER!) Seal the bag tightly (with duct
or other stong tape) and leave overnight, outside. Next morning, go
outside, open the bag and rinse off the racks. After they are well
rinsed, they can be brought in and put back into the oven. Take another
plastic bag outside and dispose of the other one into it, sealing shut
to keep the fumes contained.

 RH> bribe a grandchild. (G)

GJ> Likewise. Most are living overseas or interstate, and the only one
GJ> here, aged 5, is a bit young.

RH> Sigh! At least you have a grandchild nearby. We've chatted, via
RH> Skype, with ours on a regular basis since Christmas time. Sarah is
RH> geting more and more words, just have to get her to take her "be-be"
RH> (pacifier) out of her mouth so she will talk to us.

GJ> I sometimes get Skype calls to help grandchildren with homework, and I
GJ> do travel around and see most of them from time to time. I still
GJ> haven't seen the latest one (2 months old) in Alice Springs, or the
GJ> first great-grandchild (4 months) in Auckland (NZ).

So when are you planning those trips? Robert hasn't asked for any
homework help yet; he probably will, eventually. A couple of weeks ago,
his school had a speech contest. While we were talking one night, he
recited the poem that he was going to do for the contest. Last week I
asked Rachel how he did. She said that he placed 4th--but felt he
should have advanced to the next round as the top 3 in his grouping were
girls & he felt a boy should be represented.

GJ> BTW, has MLoo got a beard these days? I saw someone who looked and
GJ> sounded remarkably like Michael with a beard being interviewed in a
GJ> European airport, sounding off about not being able to get on a plane

RH> I've not seen him since the picnic in 08 so couldn't tell you. There
RH> are so many unhappy stranded folks right now, I wouldn't be surprised
RH> if he were among them.

GJ> No signals yet from him, so he must be working. If he was stuck in an
GJ> airport I would expect he would get some sort of connection.

Undoubtedly he would. He's probably having fun somewhere and will do a
write up on it when it's finished.

GJ> food and other items. Angela Merkel is trapped in Lisbon, but at
RH> I understand she got home today.

GJ> I heard she managed to get to the funeral on a military helicopter.

There's usually a way to work around problems, some more creative than
others.

GJ> least there are buses and trains still running across Europe. It will
RH> That's a big help, as is the Chunnel.

GJ> Although Eurostar trains are booked out some time ahead, with standing
 GJ> room only.

And who wants to stand all the time needed to make a crossing?

RH> We don't have any flights planned soon. The next one we anticipate
RH> will be at Christmas, to see the kids and grand kids. AFAIK, you
RH> should be able to get out to Vienna (enjoy it) when the time comes; I
RH> can't imagine the cloud lasting another 4 weeks. Then, too, in
RH> January, 1983, who expected Kiluaea's eruption to keep going, up until
RH> now, with no signs of ending.

GJ> As of today, some airlines are flying into the area, so I am hopeful.
GJ> Ash from the volcano is being replaced by lava flow, which doesn't
GJ> affect the aircraft so much. My flights go via Kuala Lumpur and
 GJ> Amsterdam to Vienna.

Sounds like you're not worrying about the flights too terribly bad now.

Catch you later,
