For Army, it's the PX or Post Exchange.  Air Force call it the BX or
Base Exchange.  Those 2 are under the same management known as AAFES or
Army Air Force Exchange System.  The Navy and Marines operate what they
call an NEX or Navy (Navel?) Exchange System.  Any honerably retired
veteran and spouse can use any Exchange.  An unremarried widowed spouse
can as well.  Alcohol, however, is usually sold at a Class VI store;
I've no idea how that name came about.  An Exchange is like Wal-Mart,
Belks (or whatever your regional department store is), electronics
store, etc all in one.  Some high priced stuff, some house brand.

OTOH, groceries are bought at commissaries.  DeCA or Defense Commissary
Agency is the umbrella group that is in charge of all stores, no matter
what branch of service.  Commissaries carry a lot of the same stuff from
store to store--a large one might have 4-5 brands of ketchup; a small
one, only a couple, maybe 3 from which to choose.  More organics are
working their way into the stores.  Regional products are included as
well; there was a nice selection of macadamia nut products, Kona
coffees, Hawaiian (from the Big Island) teas and other items at the
Schofield Barracks store.

We are just a bit too far away to get to an Exchange & commissary on a
regular basis right now.  Distance, as well as school work, is why we're
shopping closer to home.  Depending on where we settle after seminary,
we may go back to more on post shopping, with supplimental items bought
in town.
