Hi Janis,

>> Just remembered who bought Giant out over here.. It's Weiss. Haven't
>> been in the store since they took over.. I should check it out though

JK> > You mean Weis as in the chain I see in PA? My maiden name was Weiss
JK> (2 s > vs the store with one s). I've never been in one.

JK> Yes, that's the one, sorry for the misspelling. It is with one 's'.

Not a problem; I'm not related to the Weis's that I know of. OTOH, I am
related to Weiss's. (G)

JK> them for > the freezer--sandwich bags inside a freezer bag. All that
JK> didn't fit in > the preportions went into one bag so we had a bag of
JK> mixed rice to put > into the cooker. Interesting combo, not bad in
 JK> taste either. (G)

JK> Good idea :) I often refigerate my bags of rice. Some things seem to
JK> change consistency when you freeze them, though I've not ever frozen
JK> rice. Did you notice any difference?

No difference; it's very low (if any) moisture and by double bagging it,
there's little chance any moisture can get in. I use zipper type
freezer bags, usually a store brand. Anyway, the rice gets cooked in my
rice cooker & comes out good.

>> them and ask them (g). Maybe I'll write to Progresso.. I used to love

JK> > It would be interesting to see what kind of an answer they gave you.

JK> I'll look online and see if I can email their custumer service dept.
JK> Might actually get an answer :)

If somebody actually knows the answer. Usually Customer Relations and
Engineering (Product Research/Development) in a company that size don't
talk to each other very often.

JK> > Agreed there. We used to buy a number of their soups until they
JK> started > putting the nutritional values on the label. The amount of
JK> sodium in > them is entirely unreasonable; you can't season with just
 JK> salt.

JK> Same here! I did like the convenience.. but haven't purchased them
JK> in ages it seems.. Seems soup is so easy to throw together. I've made
JK> chicken soup from just gizzards when funds were really low, and if you
JK> have enough of them, it's really good :) I usually make chicken soup
JK> from the whole bird (or at least most of one) though.

Necks and backs make a cheap soup base also. I did one once in the years
before Steve went into the Army that had, IIRC, 10 or more different
vegetables in it besides the chicken. It was summer so I had odds and
ends of all kinds of fresh produce that needed to be used--made a really
good soup.

>> we had to get some plants for the garden since I didn't have all the
>> seed I wanted.. I got a number of corn plants that I figure I'll put
>> in that caged area in the backyard.. so the doggies can't get them :)

JK> > We went, but got up there closer to 11. I didn't buy
JK> anything--wanted > green beans but it was a bit too early. Lots of
 JK> strawberries but I
JK> > didn't want any that had been sitting in the sun for almost 4 hours.

JK> Same with the farm eggs.. I didn't check to see if the woman selling
JK> them had others in cold storage, I should have looked.. Maybe I will

The ones that sell eggs at ours generally have them in coolers. We
didn't get up there this past week but stopped at the produce stand
instead. I used some green beans I got there to do the beans with EVOO,
balsamic vinegar & garlic recipe you sent a couple of weeks ago ( a half
batch). It will be repeated; we both liked it.

JK> next time we go. Kind of broke this week, so we'll wait another week
JK> or so. Our car decided to give us trouble so Ron is having the repair
JK> guy pick it up on Monday. No second driver around so we kind of have
JK> to make do with getting the repair done this way (bummer). We're
JK> hoping it's not going to be a bundle (grin). The local fellow is
JK> usually very reasonable though, and he does good work.

No fun not having a working vehicle, especially in an area with no
public transportation. There's a bus down to Raleigh a couple of times
a day but I don't know how long I'd have to plan if I needed to get to
an appointment there that way. Even worse would be getting over to
Chapel Hill by bus, nothing direct from Wake Forest.

>> noticed the pups digging at them furiously last week but the plants

JK> > Get something on the peppery side; that should discourage the dogs.

JK> Heh.. Toby like jalapeno peppers, I don't know about the puppies
JK> (bg).. but I have a spray that does keep animals (cats and dogs) away
JK> from things like furniture, and it says it also works on outdoor
JK> areas. Maybe tomorrow I will try that.. it's supposed to be near 70 I

Worth a try. We didn't even get to 70 today but had about half the rain
fall deficit for the year to date made up yesterday & into this morning.

>> didn't seem to care (g). I bought some catnip plants at Agway today
>> that I figure to put around the front of the gazebo.. kitties should
>> like that :)

JK> > Four kitties drunk on cat nip? I can see it now.

JK> haha yes, if they can get to it.. the puppies have been giving them
JK> quite a hard time lately. I have to keep correcting them when they
JK> chase the kitties.. They know I won't put up with it, so that's good.
JK> They think when the chase the kittens, that everyone is having a swell
JK> time :( Lulu can't even stand up to them now, they are growing so
JK> fast. All I can hope is they will continue to listen to me when
 JK> they're scolded.

If you're firm enough with them now they should listen later. If you're
teaching them basic obedience, they should have "NO CAT CHASING!"
emphasised.

>> sun. Oh well. so much for strawberries (g).. but my blueberry plants
>> have flowers on them, so that's neat.

JK> > So maybe you will have blueberries this year?

JK> I keep checking (grin).. I'm not sure when blueberry season is.. will
JK> have to look that up.

It'll be here in a couple of weeks or so. July, maybe early August up
there.

>> > My dad usually had his garden put in arund Memorial Day.

>> I take some chances, but all in all, you can tell whether the soil is
>> ready for some kinds of vegetables, etc. And some of them need the
>> cold, not spring warm.. like peas.. and lettuce.. and beets. Also,
