Ärende: Dogs,again
==================
Hi Janis,

>> just so so many animals out there that need homes.. and you can't
>> adopt as many as you'd like to.

 JK> > I know, I'd love to adopt one but can't.

 JK> Understand!

But let me have some "fuzz therapy" with your bunch. Ever use a
fishing pole (with a feather instead of a hook) with kitties?

>> house-hold. She'd fight with any other cats in the house. She's with
>> my son now down in MD, and is the 'only kitty' (g)

JK> > Getting spoiled silly then. Right in the heart of crab
JK> country--crab > cakes every day for lunch, crab this for breakfast &
 JK> that for supper?

JK> I'd envy her if that were the case :) I have a feeling they might not
JK> do that since she is another animal that is tremendously overweight.
JK> I'll have to ask though because now I'm curious (g).

That would be spoiling her rotten. At the cost of crab, I doubt that
they do it though.  Besides, kitties shouldn't be eating that much crab;
they need to let humans have their share. (G)

>> > I don't know; he's basically an outdoor dog so I would think that

>> You mean like on a run?

JK> > No, he can roam the area. He is tied up if there's the chance of a
JK> > storm and my folks know they'll be gone or something like that but
JK> > basically he and the cat are free to wander whereever they want.

JK> He may have been really frightened if he'd been left out on the chain
JK> during a storm in the past maybe.. Then they'd probably have to work
JK> with him to get over that fear (not easy, I'd imagine).

He was really abused in his early years. One of his owners had his young
kids responsible for feedng him. They didn't do too good a job so the
vet said that he (the dog) ate stones to fill his stomach. Trouble is,
that wore his teeth down to the point where he has a hard time eating
anything like hard dog food.

>> food for Priscilla - it was easier for her to eat than plain dry.
>> Anyway, if your parents' dog is mostly eating human food rather than
>> dry dog food, that could be bad for his teeth I guess.

JK> > He's eating more human food than he should. Mom & Dad just aren't
JK> > making the connection between the little bit here every morning,
JK> there > every night, and more at his regular meal times. In a way, if
 JK> they
JK> > could set aside the same amount of human food that they give him
JK> every > day, they would be able to see better how much they give the
JK> dog. He > also gets dry and canned dog food.

JK> Yeah, that's a bit much I suppose. Maybe they watch the amounts of
JK> the dry and canned though..

They do, somewhat. It's the extras; they always add gravy or some other
liquid (like the soaking water from the pot of mashed potatoes before
it is washed) to the dry food. All that adds to the calorie count.

>> for those our parents' age. I was talking to my mom about that
>> today.. she was telling me how expensive her medications were getting.

JK> > I know; Tricare has had the same rates for everything
JK> (perscriptions, dr > appointments outside the military system, basic
JK> insurance, etc). Now > there's talk about raising the
 JK> rates.................

JK> That's bad.. we're hoping they don't start taking out more out of
JK> Ron's paychecks.. so far, the company has been able to just pick plans
JK> that cut features (ha). What fun. At least though we have coverage
JK> so I'm not really complaining much.

Some coverage beats no coverage. Sometimes companies add quite a few
extras to the coverage they give when times are good. Then those are
cut when the economy isn't so good & people have forgotten that the
extras weren't always in the policy.

>> Once we get the pups up to date on their shots, the next step is
>> getting the two pups spayed and neutered.. THEN we can probably forget
>> about the vet until vaccine boosters are needed (g).

JK> > Always something, isn't it? You may forget about the vet but the
JK> dogs > will still be trying to "help" you garden, get underfoot while
 JK> you're > cooking and so on. (G)

JK> haha.. yes, they will. I'm used to that though, and it really isn't a
JK> problem. I figure to start training them soon, in terms of real
JK> training. They know some basics already.

I suspect they've got "beg" down pat. (G)
