Those agents changed a lot of names for people.  I guess some of it was
in trying to figure out what the person was saying and how to best write
it in English for some of the lesser literate immigrants (and agents).
Some of it was trying to simplify a name; other times it was in an
attempt to make it sound "more American".  Even a simple one like Weiss
I've also seen as Weis and Weisse.  And, a varient, one of my professors
at Houghton had the last name of Weese--the way non German speakers
usually try to pronounce Weiss.

It's a lot less fuss and bother to use one.  Combine the rice and
liquid, shut the top, plug it in, press start (some are plug & play) and
it does its thing.  Some have a steamer rack or basket; my first one (a
pass along from Deborah) had the rack.  Nice so you could cook
vegetables or something while the rice was cooking.  I'll probably look
for that when this cooker (bought it in HI) dies.  Interestingly, we
taught a fair number of folks in HI how to cook brown rice in it. A lot
of them had considered it but not tried doing so until we told them how
we do it.

I usually made the stock with all the fat, then skimmed from the
finished product, leaving some for flavor. Tried it once with no fat and
it definately lacked the flavor fat gives it.

It can cool off pretty early up there. (G)  We had a bit of a garden at
the one place where we lived in Swansboro. I had my hands full with a
baby & toddler; Steve was working 30 miles away, pastoring a church,
going to school 30 miles the other direction and on the fire departent
so the garden didn't get the attention it needed.  I was doing all our
bread making, putting up (boughten or given) produce and doing whatever
sewing I could squeeze in (mostly clothes) then.

I think so too.  I had the left overs, cold, today.  The balsamic
vinegar was a bit too sharp cold.

Ouch!  But, as you say, it beats several years of car payments.  That's
how our van lasted for 14 years.  When the AC went out in 06 tho, we
figured it wouldn't be worth the cost (about value of the van) to fix
it.  Then too, at that age, it was a "what's going to go next?"
situation.

I know what you mean.  We've had more of a gradual transition from
winter to spring, with a bit of summer thrown in this year.  Problem is,
summer will be here all too soon and last too long.

She's sounding quite defensive there.  Has it always been that way or
just lately?
