Hi Ruth,

>> We usually stop at state rest-stops that have bathroom facilities. We
>> have stopped at other places though, and when we do we also by
>> something.. coffee, etc.

> Sometimes the rest stops aren't convenient when you need them. Also,

I know :) Have you ever traveled through a state that keeps you wondering
about how long you'll have to go to find one? (vbg).

> traveling off the interstates, you have to find stops where you can.
> Fast food places are good for them as well, with a minimal purchase.

Yep.. one time, I made the mistake of ordering a hamburger at BurgerKing .. wow
it tasted like glue, honestly :)

>> That's good - I hate those extremes though. They really do me in.

> I don't like them either. Right now, we're in unseasonably warm (hot,
> upper 80s, low 90s) weather with afternoon thunderstorms. Temps should
> be about 10 degrees cooler and less humid. The humidity always does me
> in; I prefer it much drier.

Same here really. The heatwave was followed by seasonably warm temps (about
70F) Today actually got a little higher than that (g).

>> Well I guess I'd forgotten some of the problems with the pathfinder.
>> Ron says it will take more than just the inspection.. but we've
>> decided to make the plunge and get a new car. Oh well.. time to cut

> Better off in the long run probably.

Definitely. It will no doubt be tight with $$ some weeks, though the monthly
payment was lower than expected since we got a good interest rate, lower than
we expected, after all. We won't though be pouring $$ into the car and that
feels wonderful (g).

>> back on some extravagences, but this is a good time since the garden
>> is doing so well. We can save a lot of money with the produce from

> Always a help. That's why my parents always put a garden in. BTW, Dad
> is doing a bit of container gardening after all--several tomato plants
> and some lettuce.

That sounds good :) Glad he is giving it a shot.

>> the garden. Today Eoin and I picked a large bag of peas, we'll have
>> them tomorrow in stir fry for lunch. We also thinned more beet greens
>> and lettuce for tonight's salad with dinner. We'll probably go

> Sounds good. Steve is more the pea eater than I am. We bought some a
> few weeks ago--they were good but a lot of work for a little yield.
> Steve was concentrating on finishing school work so I didn't have any
> help shelling them.

These are sugar snap peas so you don't have to shell them. I think I planted
peas with inedible shells ONCE in my life (bg). After that shelling
experience, I decided sugar snaps were the way to go (vbg). You can let them
fully develop and shell them if you want, or you can just pick them when they
are at the stir-fry size.

>> looking at cars on Tuesday since the boys are here until Monday, we
>> wouldn't chance a trip in the Xterra with it's blown engine :(

> Don't blame you at all on that one.

It sounded so terrible. I can't imagine how the guys at that other shop didn't
"know" what was going on :( When Ron was coming home from that second repair
shop in Binghamton the other day, the car sounded like a window fan as he
passed by the window where I was. :(

>> I loved him in "The Twelve Chairs" It is a 1970 'slapstick comedy'
>> film directed by Mel Brooks. Wonderful film but then so were a number
>> of the others he was in.

> I was still at home then & we didn't go to the movies that much so I
> missed it. One I should look for? I got "Follow That Bird" from the
> $5.00 bin at Wal-Mart last night. (G)

It's a good one :) We enjoy it.

>>> Yep, I do. We may make the ricotta as well.. it's easy enough (g). We
>>> should have a 'secondary picnic' Lol

>> > I've never made ricotta; that sounds interesting.

Yes, it's easy to do really.

>> As long as I can get the right kind of milk, we'll be set :) I make
>> it with whole milk, some goat's milk (just a small amount) and lemon

> Goat's milk? For flavor or what?

Yes, it does help the flavor.

>> juice. One day I actually made mascarpone cheese as well :) Then

> Steve said his mom never bought mascapone; I thought he'd grown up with
> cannoli but he said the first time he had them was at an Italian place
> in AZ.

Ah.. Cannoli were a staple at mom's on every holiday. We loved them :)

>> after letting it sit in the frige for a day (you have to do that), I
>> made tiramisu for Ron and I. It was great :) But you need a quart of
>> heavy cream to make that. :)

> IOW, very rich! I like the cannoli better than tiramisu but that's
> because I don't like coffee.

Understand :) Ron loves tiramisu now that I've made it a few times :) This
last time I made the lady fingers out of Italian Sponge cake as well. We ate
the extras for breakfast with our morning coffee :)

Cannoli is made with ricotta though. For that though I might buy the ricotta.
otherwise it's a lot of milk to make enough for the filling the tubes.

Take care,
Janis
