====================================================================
Hi Hap,

Somewhat behind in my reading but I got a dress delivered on time. (G)

-> How did the bone scan go today?

hn> Very interesting! Went in in the am for the
hn> injection of radioactive goo, and some "before"
hn> pictures in the machine. Not sure if it's a CAT s

hn> change still in my pockets. Then it was off until
hn> 1:30 pm when I came back for the "after" pictures.
hn> each picture took about 10-15 minutes and they
hn> took three sets. Funny thing is they perched me on a
hn> long very narrow "bed" and it had a huge "donut" that
hn> travelled up and down it's length to where they'd
hn> shoot the images. I had to hold very still, so they

Sounds like quite the proceedure. Did you glow in the dark afterward?

hn> got me situated on the "bed" and then taped me
hn> into place! I took advantage of that and dozed
hn> off for the time of the procedure.
hn> I guess I'll know the results sometime
 hn> next week or so.

I'll probably catch up to them later. Between Steve upgrading my
computer and my sewing job, I had to let Fido "stay" for a bit. Now I'm
trying to get caught up again.

-> hn> so "canning time" was different everywhere
-> hn> we went. Some years it was applesauce and
-> hn> apple or pear butters, some years apple jelly,
-> hn> some years canned tomatoes. Almost always

-> OK, that clears things up. We stayed in one place so my mom's canning
-> was basically the same old wax beans, beets, carrots & tomatoes year
-> after year. She got a freezer 2 years before I got married so was still
-> in a learning curve with it when I left home. Home made jelly went by
-> the wayside when she started summer school the year before I started
-> high school.

hn> With four hungry kids to feed, canning was a
hn> way of life at our house, as was a stocked
hn> freezer full of fish, game and meat.

My parents had 5 kids to feed so my mom canned a lot too. She and Dad
have done more stocking of the freezer with meat than they did the first
few years they had it. I think it was more fruits and veggies then,
things Mom used to can. Now the garden isn't as big so less produce is
going in the freezer or being canned. The freezer is also used for
stocking up on bread whenever they get to an outlet store. Frozen juice
concentrate and other things like that they get on major stock up
shopping trips goes in it too.

-> hn> it meant pickles. Mom would either grow them

-> I never was too successful with them.

hn> My mom has some great recipes for pickles!
hn> I don't think she does as many varieties as she
 hn> used to though.
hn> Certainly not with Pop gone.

Was he big into pickles? My mom makes a "pickle" (actually, green
tomato) relish but doesn't do pickles. She also does a (wimpy) chili
sauce that I've made a few times--but made hotter. (G)

-> My dad knew because he built the house & converted Mom's kitchen from a
-> gas stove in their rental to electric in the new house. She wasn't
-> thrilled at first with it but is happier with electric than she would be
-> with gas. Also, I think the electric is a little bit safer for her at
-> this stage of her life.

hn> My dad never even had to pour his own coffee!
hn> Mom waited on him hand and foot.

So she was really at loose ends at first last year when he passed away.
Her life's "job" had ended.

-> Very much so. Maybe 10, 15 minutes outside of Wake Forest, also the
-> same when we lived in Swansboro on the coast. Our last place there,
-> there was a good sized soybean field beside our house. Lots of tobacco
-> fields then, not hardly any now.

hn> I still saw a lot of it when I was in Tennessee
hn> last summer for Pop's funeral. And I still saw
hn> lots and lots of roadside stands where farmers
hn> sold produce from their "truck gardens"

I see the farmer's markets now, more so than roadside stands.
hn> Love a field ripened tomato and watermelons...ahhhhh.
hn> Wish we could grow decent ones up here!

Too far north and wet. (G)

-> hn> Lots of salads, and fresh veggies though.

-> I'm hurting if I do too much in one or two days--as I did in March.
-> Results were good for my folks freezer but bad for my wrist, elbow,
-> feet....................

hn> Takes planning to pick the dishes with the most
hn> reward for the least effort!

That's what I was trying for--and to give them a bit of variety from
what they usually eat. I used some recipes from "Once a Month Cooking"
and free lanced a number of my own, in larger than normal quantities.
It was intense but it worked.
