Hi Janis,

>> get used for.. He only substitutes items on the list if he has to, so

JK> > Steve has learned to call me if he wants to substitute. He will
JK> come > home with a lot that wasn't on the list that he either knows I
JK> like or > he wants to try. (G)

JK> Yep, sounds like Ron (grin). But Ron doesn't call me about it.. We
JK> gave our cell phone to my daughter, and another one to my son after
JK> Mom went back to Florida. We weren't using the thing ever (bg). They
JK> made much better use of it that we did.

We don't have a land line. The last place we had one was in HI because
we got it before we had any cell phones. Got a free phone for signing
up with cable; then, since Steve took it with him all the time, a few
years later, got me one. In GA and here, we get good enough reception
on the cell phones that it made sense to keep using them instead of
getting the land line.

>> Btw, we did end up getting a new car. It's funny looking but nice and
>> added bonus, it runs like a charm (vbg). It's 2010 Kia Soul. I told
>> my daughter it reminds me of a little red caboose :) The engine on
>> the Xterra was blown. Ron was so upset with the original garage where
>> we took it to get repaired. At least this new one has it's own dealer
>> warranty should any problems develop. The mechanic at the second place

JK> > Good--something reliable, but sort of different looking. It has a
 JK> > warranty which will be be a big help.  Watch for possible recalls;
JK> we > got one for the Escape the other day.

JK> Haven't heard of any for the Kia line, but who knows. I saw a couple
JK> this week for other cars (GM).

And our recall work was done today. Steve had it in for the 15,000 mile
servicing at the same time, came home and got a couple of nibbles, then
took off for Durham. He had to go to the VA hospital so I gave him a
shopping list to take with him. He also stopped at Lowe's for some more
munchies and Sonic for strawberry slushies. (G)

>> the downstairs bathrooms because that room has no heat either. We
>> didn't notice the lack of heating vents in either place when we bought
>> the house (bg).

JK> > As we didn't notice a few things here & there with this place. No
JK> self > cleaning kitchen but the oven is. No self washing/waxing the
JK> floor but > the fridge is frost free. Etc, etc, etc.

JK> Would be nice Lol :) Now, I have to count my automatic floor cleaner
JK> that will move with us when and if we sell.. the dogs (g). You can't
JK> count the cats because they keep bringing IN dinner eeeek... a little
JK> snake was in the mudroom today (bg).

Just trying to pay for their upkeep. (G) Every so often when we drop
some food we'll think of Sam; he did a good job of keeping our floors
clean.

>> :) When we lived in Warwick, we had total electric at one point, and
>> for that we found that turning down the heat at night to a very low
>> setting really helped.

JK> > We keep it low enough that turning it down wouldn't be as effective.
JK> > Steve read that you spend just as much bringing the heat back up in
JK> the > morning as you would by not turning the heat down so for the
JK> most point, > it's not worth it.

JK> Yes, depending on how high you keep it during the day, that's true..
JK> and how much it drops at night I guess. We don't do it here.. it's
JK> not warm enough to warrant the difference in the morning.

We have a lot of variables in the temps here. It was rough getting used
to it after the time in HI; the first winter in GA was really cold!
We've somewhat adjusted, but not fully. I plan on cooking lots of warm
the tummy foods in the winter, just as now, in summer, meals are a lot
lighter.

>> She doesn't seem willing to do so, period. She won't give up going
>> out on weekends, for example (meeting with friends to drink and dance,
>> etc.).

JK> > I'd have her reported for negligence of the elderly in her care
 JK> then.

JK> No, I don't want to make it rougher on Mom, and that's what that might
JK> do. At least it's Spring now, and the weather should be nice down
JK> there (compared to the heat of the Summer).

We'll keep the situation in our prayers.

>> to them about (and keep forgetting about (g)). There is another place
>> in Binghamton that we used to go to though, that does have brown rice.
>> Too bad this one doesn't.

JK> > Talk them into one rice cooker full of brown per day, then increase
JK> as > sales of it go up. Take them samples.

JK> I may do that. Show them the menu from the other place in Binhamton
 JK> as well :)

Good idea; maybe they will take the hint. White rice is cheap but
doesn't have the nutritive value of brown, by a long shot! It's also
tasteless so I usually put soy sauce on it. (G)

>> Today I ground a ton of flour so I don't have to be running to the
>> store for it, hard red wheat and soft white. I was able to get it to
>> grind very fine, I just had to grind it a number of times. Bread is
>> baking now, but I cheated and threw it in the Zojirushi and let it
>> have at it (g). I still have to get out to the garden and afterwards,
>> vaccuum downstairs today.. Aspirin will be my friend when I'm done
>> with all that (bg).
