=====================
Hi Michael,

RH> OK, it was a passing thought. I had a professor in in college who had
RH> earned 3 doctorates but could never claim any of them.

ML> Brings forth the question of what the meaning is of an earned
ML> doctorate. I know plenty of folks whose expertise would
 ML> qualify them for an advanced degree if they shopped around;

I guess you'ld have to go back quite a ways to answer that one. It
probably dates back to the Middle Ages when all the academia
rig-a-ma-role really came into inot it's prime.

ML> also some whose expertise shouldn't qualify them for anything
ML> but who actually have the diploma (some from well-known
ML> institutions); also some whose expertise in a given field is
ML> undoubted but whose utter silliness in others, such as real
ML> life, should have disqualified them from being academically
ML> recognized but who have their diplomas anyway.

I could probably qualify for a PhD in a number of areas. (G)

RH> The papers weren't actual thesis ones but work he did on
 RH> the Manhatten Project.

ML> My issue wasn't like that but rather a general antipathy
ML> to the system (and to most systems, come to think of it).

I know. Our son in law is headmaster of a private school in Las Vegas.
We've had some discussions on education, the way it's handled in public
and private schools now, and other related topics this week. The
students at Challenger Schools (There are a number of campuses [campii?]
in the western states.) learn at a higher academic level (by far!) than
public school students. Any student that shows signs of apathy there is
left behind fast and usually asked to find another school.

RH> Any interest in teaching anything?
 ML> If I did, I would have.
 RH> It's a hard profession.

ML> And underpaid. I'll leave such professions to those who love them.

Yes, it's like the military in that sense. (G)

ML> Well, as fajitas are merely soft-tortilla tacos, yeah.
RH> Fajitas usually don't have all the extras tacos do; I put meat,
RH> pepper, onion, cheese and (if I have it) tomatoes in mine. Also, sour
RH> cream (plain yogurt) and salsa. Tacos usually have lettuce and meat
RH> cooked in a sauce--at least most of the ones I've had.

ML> Real tacos are the main ingredient, usually grilled meat,
ML> sometimes garnished with vegetables and/or cheese, and/or sauced,
ML> served in or next to soft tortillas. Which describes a "fajita" to
ML> a tee. As I have said earlier, I often prefer fried-shell tacos,
ML> which are "inauthentic" and a north-of-the-border invention but
ML> are funner to eat; and as I may not have said earlier, I tend to

Depends on how sloppy I want to eat. (G) I like the crunchiness of hard
tacos but don't always want to wear my meal on my shirt.

ML> avoid fajitas unless they're really made of flank/skirt steak -
ML> one pays a premium for 1. too many vegetables; 2. the silly
ML> presentation on the spitting platter thingy; 3. overcooked meat.

Pepper and onion is usually enough to go with the meat for me. We'll
use different meats--I knoe, not always authentic, but good. They may
not be real with all the stuff we sometimes add but it helps fill out a
leaner meal or clean out the fridge of stuff that needs to be eaten
before going bad. (G)

I'll do Italian sausage with peppers, onions, mushrooms and garlic. A
lot of the same basic stuff as fajitas but with an Italian bent.

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
