From Jay Jacobs's bio of James Beard, as excerpted in
Ruth Reichl, Endless Feasts:

 Someone else once defined haute cuisine as food
 produced by madmen for the delectation of foods.

Huh? By the way, can anyone search out the proper
citation? I presume the last word is meant to be
"t00lz" or "rich axeholes" or something.

Which reminds me of a misprint from the first edition
of Dorothy Sayers's Gaudy Night, in which Lord Peter
Wimsey likens his Jackie (named Harriet Vane) to
"Caesar's sacrifice," and when she goes huh, explains
"a beat without a heart," which should elicit maximum
huhs. The s is missing. Nobody has caught it in subsequent
editions and printings.

Stupid me:

Hood New England Creamery Rhode Island Lighthouse Coffee -
espresso filled chocolate lighthouses in coffee flavored
ice cream - this was on sale for 2 bucks for whatever
passes for an almost half gallon these days, so I picked
it up for a party, despite it being poison on so many
levels. It actually tastes kind of good, the ice cream
fairly rich (though all ice cream except the boutiquey
stuff tastes like ice milk to me these days), with good
convincing coffee milk flavor, and surprisingly amusing
chocolate lighthouses, very coffee-groundish and somewhat
chocolaty in a sticky way. But stupid me, I had anxieties
about whether the lighthouses were milk chocolate.

I also bought a Rolling Rock - which had off-estery flavors
just like PBR, whose price it matched. What was I thinking?

And a bunch of starch:

And two varieties of Deep River potato chips, which were
expensive (50c an ounce) and pretentious (the label says
"serious flavor," and one actually can't take anything
seriously that calls itself serious).

Sweet Maui Onion was relatively good, the flavor being fairly
oniony sweet but way too salty, the effect being almost of
those artificial onion rings that you sometimes find.

The Original Kettle were so tasteless that the tiny touch of
rancidity in the finish was the best part.

I also got two varieties of Kettle chips at a bit more than
half the price -

Hot Jalapeno were medium, which is about all one can expect,
with a bit of the greenness of the pepper, not bad;

Spicy Thai tasted like ginger, lemongrass, and sugar -
not bad but only somewhat spicy and only a little Thai.

The chips were thicker, fresher, and tastier than the more
expensive brand, so there we are.
