> Hi Ruth,

Happy Birthday :) We hope you have a great day :)

>> No doubt - While so many of today's mom's do go more natural in a lot
>> of ways, it's sad to see them forget about such natural things as
>> herbal teas, etc.

I think it would be great to do so. From what I've seen around NYS (especially
Ithaca and Binghamton) a number of the new mom's have been more aware of
natural foods, homeopathy for treatments, childbirth and a bit more. I would
guess it depends on the area where one lives. It's a very "in" thing to do,
and glady it's a really good thing for the kids and the family in general.

What I'm not crazy about is one of the more recent habits that has also flooded
the areas mentioned above.. that of putting the baby to sleep in the same bed
with 'Mom and Dad'. My daughter jokingly showed me a comment written by
another young mom on The Mothering Board.. the new mom she quoted said, "When I
was watching TV last night I saw a crib ad.. I almost started to cry when I saw
that little baby all by itself in that huge crib! It's cruel!".. well, you can
guess what I told my daughter.. :) Just a few days ago a study was reported in
various news agencies.. the habit of putting babies in the same bed as parents
was pretty bad, and reportedly possibly the cause a number of infant deaths
(will have to go online and find the source). Hopefully those kids saw it.

> Mom & Dad still had 3 other kids at home when I went to school. I think
> it was more of a convenience thing for them then.

I can see that. I'd bet if my Italian dad didn't have to have his way, Mom
would have done the same thing :)

>> for.. My mom always made everything from scratch and when I was
>> married it just made sense to go that route. Luckily for us, it
>> helped with the budget as well - especially when I started gardening.

> Scratch cooking does make more sense (with few exceptions)

True. I haven't made Tofu from scratch nor tried making tahini from scratch,
though I've seen a number of recipes for it.. When I make hummus it's so simple
to make that I should try one of the millions of recipes I've seen for it :)

Agree there :)

Actually, I did price it out once when I was baking for people. It was much
cheaper to make things from scratch.. without taking bad shortcuts that would
affect the quality of the cake.

>> I have pictures of my daughter helping me plant seeds in the garden -
>> she was such a little cutie :) She doesn't like it when I show off
>> those pictures haha

> I know the feeling on the pictures. (G) Dad used to do a lot of photo
> work for the newspaper and other & was always sticking a camera in our
> faces.

Heheh :) My dad always had the movie camera going, and every now and again,
we'd beg him to show us the movies after dinner. I'm trying to remember how
often it was that he'd do it..Certainly on holidays.. other than that, probably
once a month or someone's birthday, that kind of thing :) Later Mom had those
old films copied to CD for us.. the edits made by the reproducing company were
great. It was good to see Mom and Dad and the rest of us from way back :)

>> to 10% hard winter, and the rest soft white berries. That bread
>> cookbook I showed you from the grain site uses a different mix for
>> 'all-purpose' but my guts don't like that very well (g).

> Got to go with what the gut likes.

Yes, that's true most times. Addiontally, Ron is not a big fan of
wholewheat... Which sometimes drives me nuts.. I love wheat-meat (gluten). He
was amazed at the gravy I made with it, and ate it completely, but he didn't
ask for more (grin). Not a bit one on his list (g).

> We are used to the whole wheat and
> don't have problems with it. Haven't tried the ravioli maker yet; still
> settling "dust" from the trip. We'll probably wait until the weather
> cools off a bit too.

Sure, I can understand that. Probably best to wait til the cooler whether
anyway :)

> Probably more than half, since it's just the 2 of us. But yes, good way
> to stock up.

That's the nice thing about making it from scratch. You can half recipies,
etc.

>> Eoin doesn't have a problem. I've also used Coconut oil for pies
>> because it is a solid shortening in it's natural form (g)... trouble
>> is it can be very coconut-y flavored in a pie shell - which I don't
>> mind since I love coconut, but my daughter isn't a big fan (g).

> Steve would like it, I'm not so fond of coconut.

I saw a half gallon container of Coconut milk at the store the other day, I was
really surprised. My daughter had a container at her house so I took a look at
the healthfood store here.. :)

>> the > quilt top to a couple of classmates)

>> That's neat - bet they'll love seeing that.

> They did; the husband of one suggested I enter it into competition like
> a fair. I don't think it's that quality yet.

I thought it was :) It's probably becoming one of those lost arts.. :(

> So, once things settle down, we'll give it a try.

Let me know how it goes :)

>> > And now we've got the info for the book so we can get it and have
>> the > instructions. Thanks.

>> I think I found it at a book sale at Barnes and Noble.. discounted
>> books :) I love finding little treasures like that.

> So do I. Steve put in an Amazon order (text books) today but I didn't
> know until after the fact. I'd have suggested he look for it.

Well, there's time :)

>> Yep.. I remember my dad being so upset when he found out he had
>> cancer.. his first reaction was 'who's going to take care of mom??'.
>> I'll never forget that.

> Sounds like you do a pretty good job of taking care of her when she's
> visiting you. (G) BTW, Steve checked our herb plantings when we got
> home & said they're looking good.

That's great :) We had a lot of rain today.. good thing.. with all this heat
:)

>>> it, but doesn't think she has much choice :( I wish Billy, my
>>> cousin, would give her break :(

>> > Maybe he needs a bug in his ear? (G)

>> A big one Lol

> There are some good sized ones I could suggest..............

Lol :)

>> Yeah, it is.. it's not a terrible big deal to get up a little earlier
>> on Saturday to make it to the one in Binghamton, but there are
>> weekends when I really need to catch up on sleep now and again.. side
>> effects of some of the drugs I have to take.

> Don't I know it!

Understand :)

Take care,
Janis
