If Ruthie is missing out on Krispy Kremes she should rejoice. Although, there

My problem with KK doughnuts is that while they *are* good served hot! and
now!, their shelf life sucks and they degrade quite rapidly.

All the Dunkies I have visited have a kitchen to make donuts on-site. So the
stuff you get is not long from the oven or hot fat. Makes a big difference.

We have a local donut maker (Mel-O-Cream :
http://www.mel-o-cream.com/rise.html) with several locations serving donuts,
coffee and sandwiches. Their product ages much more nicely than Krispy Kremes
and is as good or better (in some cases) as Dunkin Donuts. In fact, Dunkin
Donuts has tried several time to establish a presence here - with very limited
success. Currently they have a freshly opened shop located inside St. John's
Hospital ... giving visitors and staff an alternative to the hospital-run
coffee shop.  Bv)=

It's interesting that in head-to-head blind taste tests Mel-O-Cream kicks
Krispy Kreme's butt every time. It's also interesting that Mel-O-Cream does not
use that as a "brag".
 
MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Grandma's Donuts
 Categories: Breads, Snacks, Desserts
      Yield: 1 batch
 
    3/4 c  Sugar
    1/3 ts Salt
      1 lg Egg
      1 ts Vanilla
      1 tb Lard
  2 1/2 c  Flour
      1 ts Baking soda
    3/4 c  Buttermilk
      1 c  Powdered sugar
 
  Beat sugar, salt and egg together. Add vanilla and
  fat, and cream into sugar. In a separate bowl, combine
  flour, soda and buttermilk. Stir two mixtures together.

  Place on floured surface and flatten to 1/4". Cut into
  4-inch rounds and cut out 1-inch centers. Drop into hot
  oil in a skillet, and brown on each side.

  Drain on paper towels. Coat warm donuts with powdered
  sugar, if desired.

  Makes 1 batch.
