It is, especially in its simplicity.  OTOH, I went for a Smoke Daddy
smoke generator, and got it mounted.  On an empty smoker with the unit
fired up for a test run, it raised the temperature 11-12 degrees above
ambient, which started at about 94 degrees F, and was decreasing as the
day waned.  I got the "Big Kahuna" model, as it holds more chips and can
thus go for longer between fill-ups.  Still, for cold smoking I will
need to use ice in the smoker to keep the temperatures down because
ambient here during the days is in the 90-100 degree range, and hit 102
degrees F a few days ago.

Is your smoker insulated at all?  What would happen if you put in a
larger heating unit?  Given that we don't normally get extreme cold
here, I still would expect the one I got which is like Dale's will be
able to hold a good temperature due to it being insulated.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.04

      Title: Smoked ham and sauteed apple muffins
 Categories: Breads
      Yield: 4 servings

      4 oz Jarlsberg cheese - sliced
      4 ea English muffins - split and
           -toasted
      4 tb Butter
      2 tb Light brown sugar
      2 ts Dry mustard
      1 ea Apple - cored and thinly
           -sliced
    1/2 lb Smoked ham - sliced

    Arrange sliced cheese on toasted muffin halves.  Melt butter, brown
  sugar, and dry mustard in a skillet over medium heat, stirring
  constantly to combine.  Add apples and saute just until tender.
  Remove from pan with slotted spoon.
    Add sliced ham and toss with pan drippings until heated.  Lift
  slices onto muffin halves; top with apple slices.
