Ärende: RE: good veggies
========================
Hey Janis!

-> > they keep them in cold storage to parcel out
->
-> It was good for us because of the variety of fruit and vegetables.
->
-> > each week throughout the year. Still the list
-> > above seems a bit pricey to me...must be the
-> > shipping charges I suppose!
->
-> I think so. They're using UPS not the post office, which I know can be
-> expensive. Still with the price of gas, and since we're about 15-30 minutes
-> from any large supermarkets the cost was not that out of whack to us. I
say
-> that, but know that as soon as the dirt can be worked, I'll have my garden
in,
-> that's for sure :)
->
Now

->

It pays to pay attention to what you use
and buy!

->
-> We shop more like every two weeks.. since I've got a lot of veggies in the
-> freezer from the garden, that seems to do it for us. Then once in a while,
-> I'll have to restock the pasta and grains, etc.. Food isn't as bad here in
the
-> Binghamton area compared to some others around us.. for instance in
Ithaca NY,
-> my daughter says the cost of food is outrageously high.. no doubt
because that
-> area doesn't have an major interstates to transport food items.. just ONE
long
-> winding road :(
->

That can make a difference, I have several (well
more than several) good markets available all
nearby so I can shop for a day or two in advance
if I need to. I can stop at one of the stores while
I am out doing my daily errands.

-> > -> Yeah, it was handy.. They can't eat citrus, we can.. They like
brussel

-> > -> I don't (that's a joke <bg>).
-> > ->
-> > I LOOOOVE brussels sprouts! $1.98 a pound this week
-> > and still a good buy. Broccoli is $0.74 a pound,
-> > leeks are $1.89 a pound.
->
-> hehe :) I admit, since I tried brussel sprouts with the recipes you posted,
-> I've really changed my mind about them <grin>
->

Way to go!! BTW Ciscoe is a big fan of brussels sprouts too!

ago,

vegetables

remember..

->
-> Agree there :) This year one of the reasons I want to add another bed is
to
-> give the bok choy and other chinese veg's some more room. My husband
really
-> likes the home grown potatos too.. so your post about the potatoes was
of great
-> interest to me :)
->
We used to grow parsnips, kohlrabi, beets, turnips, brussels sprouts
green beans, squashes and a few other veggies we liked. All were more
pricey in the store than the "staples" (potatoes, onions, corn etc)

-> Found it and bookmarked it..
http://www.ciscoe.com/~ciscoe/archive/spuds.html
-> :) Thanks for that :) I might not need that other bed after all :)
->
That's the guy, he is a real character, and an all around nice guy!
