BF> What do you mean with "tight envelope"?

 DS> Energy-efficient windows (triple-glazed, gas-filled), strong and
DS> efficient vapor barrier, no leaks or drafts.
JW> As well as a tight envelope, there's a need for adequate insulation.

JW> Today a lot of homes here use 2X8 walls with 6 inches of pink and 2
JW> inches of styrofoam. They are so airtight that they need HVACS (air
JW> to air heat exchangers) to get the airflow up to one exchange every
JW> 1.5 hours, the minimum for moisture control and good health.
 JW>
JW> This year, ahead of the national code, we made that a city code.

Very interesting to read how your house remains a warm bubble in the
midst of the icy wastes. What kind of heat exchanger do you use?
Rotary or contraflow finned tube?

JW> At least 90% of our older homes and 75% of our older mobile homes
JW> have been upgraded to some degree.

And once upon a time, simple igloos were used...

DS> Some geographical areas aren't good candidates for it, either; there
DS> are parts of my area where it is impossible to dig a deep well at a
DS> reasonable cost because of bedrock close to the surface.

JW> Unless your bedrock is pock marked with old mine shafts. [g]

Another solution to escape the worst of the cold would be to live down
in the mines, well underground, like the opal miners at Coober Pedy do
to excape the Central Australian heat.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Fresh Prickly Pear Cactus Tostadas
 Categories: Breads, Chilies, Vegetarian
      Yield: 1 Variable

           Corn tortillas (baked, not
           Fried)
           Refried pinto beans
           Red onion
           Olive oil
           Ground chile (muy caliente)*
           Rennetless cheese (vegan
           Friendly)
           Garlic cloves
           Fresh nopales (prickly pear
           Cactus pads)
           Sour cream *
           Cilantro (opt)
           Green onion (opt)

(spicy guacamole can be substituted for beans)

  * I don't understand the juxtaposition of specifying both sour cream
  AND rennetless cheese - UDD

Remove thorns from pads, rinse them and slice the cactus into small
cubes. Cook in boiling water with several cloves of garlic (sliced)
for 5-8 minutes. Remove from heat and drain water. Allow nopales to
  cool.

Bake corn tortillas in oven (about 400 degrees) until crisp on both
sides, take care not to burn them. Allow to cool. Cook pinto beans
with 5-6 garlic cloves for about an hour an half, allow to cool.

In a frying pan, pour olive oil to cover bottom. Heat oil, pour in
sliced red onion. Cook onion for 3-4 minutes and add beans. Mash the
beans as they fry. Allow bean mix to boil for several minutes, turn
off the heat, sprinkle chile powder (habanero/other favorites) to
taste and stir into the mix. Cover the top of the mix w/ grated
cheese and allow to melt, and cool down.

Smear the crisp tortillas w/ pinto bean mix (or guacamole), add a
layer of nopales and top w/ a dollop of sour cream.

Sprinkle chopped cilantro and chopped green onion if desired.
