=============
Hi Ruth,

-> dad replaced it (the knife) for Christmas with one that wasn't as good
-> but worked for my needs (pencil sharpening mostly) until I got my Swiss
-> Army knife.

 RH> I'll bet you were almost glad to see the back of the other one.

I think we just tossed it in the garbage can before we packed out from
Germany. Yes, it was that much a piece of junk; the other was an old
Camp King.

-> RH> require a room of their own, almost, and cost about the same as a
->  RH> Camry.

-> Yes, that's why we went with this set up.

 RH> Smart move.

But we've spent other money in getting it set up. Still much less than
a used car but all stuff that will be handy. Yard saling today produced
a bunch of odds and ends of threads that I won't mind using up making
"practice" quilts for it.

-> RH> York efficiency. Some of those have no kitchen at all. Maybe a
 RH> dorm
-> RH> fridge and a coffee maker, but that's it.

-> New generation of young adults who don't know how to cook. Take out,
-> fast food and microwaveable stuff is what they live on.

 RH> ...if you can call it living.

Exsisting is more like it. Just doing some demographic mind wanderings
(I'm prone to do that as a former socilogy student.) I have a hunch it
started when moms went to work big time in the late 60s or so. A
generation of latch key kids who's moms may have relied on fast food or
take out, now out on their own, are continuing those eating habits. Some
of them are now parents, and, not having learned how to cook from Mom,
are continuing those habits with their own kids. Sounds reasonably
logical to me.

-> like to have everything I'm going to needd out before I start. Saves
-> hunting it down at a critical time, with messy hands. Hmmmmmmmm; I
-> wonder.......is it just me or do others here do the same thing? It will
-> be interesting to the feed back on this one.

 RH> I do that a lot too; these older kitchens aren't that great for
 RH> counter space. I use my kitchen table as a prep surface as often as
 RH> not.

I don't have room for a kitchen table. I'll try to put prep stuff
together by groups, depending on what stage of the prep I need it for.
You should have seen tho, last Saturday, the eggplant stuff in various
stages in the kitchen. First Steve sliced it on the small counter by
the sink. I took it over to the counter between the fridge and pantry
to bread, putting the finished pieces on the counter that Steve had used
(after he cleaned it up). Then I fried it on the stove across the room
(about a step and a half), putting the cooked ones on a plate (ended up
needing 4) on the half counter by the stove. They ended up on the
counter where I had breaded it. Final assembly was done between that
counter for the eggplant, the stove for the sauce and the counter by the
stove for the chese.

->  RH> space. And a big, deep sink.  A pot-filler over the stove wouldn't

-> Sounds good but the sink would have to be a double one for me. Possibly
-> a large one and a smaller, rinse sink like I had when we lived on post
-> at Fort Hood, TX. A walk in pantry is another "want".

 RH> I've never been able to warm up to the double sinks; they're usually
 RH> too small to handle some of my pots. A walk-in pantry is something
 RH> I've always wanted too. My grandmother had one, but her house was

That's why I was thinking again to the big wash up sink. If I've got an
island, I can get a sink in it and another one along the wall. All pipe
dream at this point.

Catch you later,
Ruth
