Hi Janis,

JK> > That's too bad; we knew a young man who had the same sort of problem
JK> > when he went to SC from HI for his basic training. He didn't have
JK> food > allergies but his asthma kicked into high gear & he had to be
JK> sent home > with a "sorry, thanks for trying" deferrment.

JK> Yes, same with my daughter.. it was especially sad because she'd never
JK> gotten migraines before.. Ron gets them though.. very badly as a
JK> matter of fact. He doesn't have any allergies so go figure.. just

I have them as well; they are no fun. From the time I start treating it
aggressively until it's over, it's about 6 hours of misery. I've also
got allergies and asthma; misery loves company. (G)

JK> her > R&R (which she took to visit her sister & meet her new-7 weeks
JK> > nephew she was routed thru Frankfurt, Germany. She was able to
JK> deplane > briefly & got a brotchen which brought back memories of when

JK> Her sister must have been thrilled to have her visit then :) and
JK> those must have been good memories for you I'd bet ...

Very much so; we always hoped to get back but circumstances were such
that we never did.

JK> > protect you from the sun)..........yes, it takes a special person to
JK> > love that. I married one and am mom to another one. (G)

JK> Indeed... my dad was one, for sure :) No doubt my daughter took after
JK> him a bit in that. She had some tales to tell as you can imagine from
 JK> ROTC at A&M :)

I can imagine. (G) My son in law had 2 years of Air Force ROTC and was
commissioned into the Air Force but let go a couple of years ago in a
major downsizing. He'd been enlisted for several years--and his dad was
also military, first Air Force, then Army.

>> anyway, she wanted 'in' very very badly, and had intended to make it
>> to West Point... that was her dream :(
JK> > Well, give her credit for trying.

JK> Oh I do.. she's a very strong minded person. Very much like her dad :)

Sounds like Deborah. (G)

>> left in, leave more water in the mix.. I always seed my tomatoes
>> before cooking them down.. just a habit because really, I hate the
JK> > I wasn't brought up making sauce like this, nor was Steve, actually.

JK> Understand.. and it's proably not that unusual.

So, now I should start seeding the canned tomatoes? (G)

JK> > I don't have a gas stove (sure wish I did tho) but was brought up

JK> Yes, know what you mean.. even though I'm a little bothered by gas
JK> stoves.. somehow the smell gets to me at times.. I wouldn't call it an
JK> 'allergy', but it does bother me some.. I still prefer it to an
 JK> electric stove though.

It's some of the stuff they put into gas to make it have a noticeable
smell. We had gas in our first place in NC; one of the delivery men
called it "essence of dead skunk".  It is also a bit of an irritant;
that's why I ususally ran the stove vent fan.

JK> > the tomatoes a hot water bath to skin them. The X in the bottom is
JK> a > new idea for me tho. Have to suggest it to my mom for her canning
 JK> times.

JK> It's good for just a few tomatoes, but for large quantities, a hot
JK> water bath is faster and more effiecient obviously.

For sure! The X will help in that as well.

JK> > I use the recipe Steve's mom gave me; it's all bread crumbs. But,
JK> mine, > unlike hers, are from the whole wheat bread I make. I save up
JK> a bunch > of crusts (until I get a gallon size zip lock bag full) in
JK> the freezer, > then cube and toast them. Then they get ground into
 JK> crumbs.

JK> Ok.. if you bring them, then I won't make bread.. if not, it's no

I'll bring them; guess I ought to start making a list.

JK> trouble to make a loaf of whole wheat as I mentioned.. I'm used to
JK> making a loaf on the fly since I do it all the time when my grandson
JK> is here or when we want some. Using crusts is a good idea, I usually
JK> use the whole loaf and toast it up..

It's one way to use the crusts which generally don't get eaten
otherwise. If, for some reason, the loaf doesn't turn out right, I'll
set it aside for crumbing and make another one for eating.

>> grind it up and toast it, or whatever.. how do you normally make them?
>> Do you season them? I usually season them with garlic salt, oregano,
>> basil, parsley, italian cheese, and garlic chunks while the bread
>> crumbs are warm.. then toast them to make them crunchy..

JK> > Hmmmmmmmm, I might try that with the next batch. Since I use the
JK> crumbs > for other things, I don't season them as a general rule.
 JK> I've been
JK> > thinking about having some seasoned ones on hand tho

JK> I season mine since most of the time I'm using them for Italian
JK> recipes.. Your mileage may vary (g).

I'll use mine for other things, like coating turkey breast cutlets for
schnitzel.

JK> And, that, > in turn, comes from whoever taught them and the part of
JK> Italy the family > comes from. I learned from my MIL but add my own
JK> varients to them, as do > my girls.

JK> True.. My mother's family is from Northern Italy, Florence actually..
JK> they were Jewelers there.. Mom made good meatballs (bg) My dad's
JK> family was from Sicily and Grandma Mary (his mom) also made great
JK> meatballs.. their recipes were very similar actually. Grandma Romey's
JK> family was Sicilian as well (Dad's stepmom).. I don't think I've ever
JK> seen her recipe but I'd bet it was similar given the taste.

I'm not sure what part of Italy Steve's mom's family came from. I don't
know if she knows or not.

JK> Here's another funny and somewhat embarrassing note.. you've heard of
JK> Toni Basil? (I'm sure you've never cared to buy one of her records if
JK> you've ever heard one (laugh)) She did that great (haha) song 'Hey
JK> Mickey'.. (ouch).. She's one of my relatives (bg)..Granda Romey's last

Actually, I've never heard of her. Guess she's that forgettable. (G)

JK> name was Basilotta.. that's the family name, really (grin). My
JK> Godfather was Tony Basilotta, her son.. :) Toni Basil, (the singer)
JK> is a second cousin, actually.

Funny. (G)

>> Sounds just right :) Depends on how you want to do it.. you can make
>> them big and fat or little, either way will be fine, I'm sure. Bigger
>> is quicker (grin).

JK> > For sure, but my hands aren't too big. And, I suspect, you probably
