Ärende: Another Chinese Buffet

  As you might recall, we have talked about an upscale local Chinese
  buffet in our area -- and have gone there with Michael and Carol a
  good while back.   It is much nicer and has a wider selection than the
  "typical" Chinese buffet, albeit with a premium in price -- about $12
  versus about $10.

  Tonight Gail and I tested out another local buffet that may give the
  Panda competition.  The name is the Fortune Star Buffet, International
  Gourmet Buffet.   They have even more items than Panda.  Base price is
  $13.50 plus $0.99 for soda.  We both had a large number of small
  portions, focusing more on things we had never had than on old
  favorites.  A few samples:

  raw oysters -- small but tasted good to me.

  Fried frog legs -- bigger and with more meat than Panda's.

  Rangoon -- small tasty, not quite as good as Panda's and not even close
  to being as good as Michael's.

  Numerous steamed dumplings and dim-sum type items.  Varied in quality.
  We liked some, not others.

  Soups -- Gail had a chicken based egg drop soup.  Broth was very thick
  and almost oily.  I had a small serving of hot and sour.   Not as good
  as Panda's but ok.

  Fresh sushi -- they had some one making various rolls and also I saw
  fresh salmon being sliced to go on top of a rice roll.  We did not
  have any, but it looked good if you like that sort of thing.

  Grilled on the spot beef -- this was a sort of thin sliced rib meat,
  cut across the bones with bone and gristle still there (1/4 inch
  thick).
  A man was grilling it behind the serving counter.  He also had full
  headed shrimp on a skewer and hot dogs on a stick.  Gail had some of
  the beef and said it tasted good, but was pretty chewy.

  Fresh fruit -- sliced pineapple, melons, lychee (I think) -- some were
  white and some were pinkish orange, both in the same dish with sweet
  syrup.

  Various fish dishes --  At least four kinds of fish dishes.  Several
  fried whole.

  Other seafood -- squid, stuffed clams, salt water clams, etc.

  Chicken feet -- I had to try this, just to say I had done so.  OK, but
  not going to be a favorite:-}}

  Larger dessert selection than Panda -- but who has room left by then.
  Gail said that her chocolate soft serve tasted like fish.

  On the whole, we enjoyed the visit.   Next time we decide we want a
  Chinese buffet, I don't know if we'll go back there or go to Panda --
  both are decent, but not great.   When we are in a mood for a buffet,
  our favorite is still the Sapphire Indian restaurant in Laurel.
