I can't imagine buying worse, but I've eaten worse. It's amazing
what people have been conditioned to allow to happen to them, and
the government doesn't step in. You can get crabcakes or crab salad
that has no, zero, 0 crab in it, and the FDA doesn't say a word.
Roast beef that consists of random molecules of something that once
might have been a beef but could just as well have been ram bladders,
reconstituted and shaped to look like beef. Nonfat cream, for crying
out loud. All appearance and flummery and no substance.

What a waste it is to lose one's life for lunchmeat, or something, how
true that is. To quote J. Danforth Quayle, quondam vice president of
this great nation.

I wondered why people will buy water-added meat from Wal-Mart at the
same price (if you factor in the water weight) of normal meat at the
regular store. They're conditioned to think "Wal-Mart = cheap," the
same way they think "Southwest Airlines = cheap" (despite the fact
that on average the prices are pretty much comparable, and the costs
of no-frills outfits such as Wal-Mart and Southwest are lower.

Looks no worse than other recipes of its type, and Spam, though
disgusting in a lot of contexts, would be right at home here.

SOWANS or FLUMMERY
Categories: Dessert, English, Scot, Welsh, Irish
Serves: 6 to 8

3 Tb (heaped) fine oatmeal
- or 4 heaped Tb cracked wheat
2 oranges, juice of
2 Tb regular sugar
1/4 pt (150 ml) cream
2 oranges, finely grated rind of
4 Tb honey, brandy or whisky
1/4 pt (150 ml) whipped cream

Soak oatmeal or cracked wheat in enough cold water to cover
by 1". Let stand for 24 hr.

Pour off water, cover grain again with 1/2 pt fresh cold water.
Leave to stand for another 24 hr.

Stir well and strain the liquid into a pan. Add orange juice,
sugar; boil 10 min or until very thick, stirring frequently.
Allow to cool a little before stirring in the cream.

Pour into a large dish or into individual dishes. Sprinkle
with grated orange rind. Leave until set, about 1 hr.

Top each dish with 2 Tb honey, brandy or whisky, 1 heaped Tb
whipped cream.

[According to my reading, this recipe uses the liquid from
soaking the grain (with its starch, I guess) but doesn't
use the grain itself.]
