Hi Ruth-

RH> Good progress, but watch how long those short bursts are.

They've become progressively shorter. I have taken to setting up my ham radio
in the back of my SUV a bit-I wear my wrist brace and take care to be
methodical and deliberate with my movements as not to do anything funny. June
9 is when I'll be heading back to see if I need physical therapy. I've gotten
about 15 degrees more movement (measured by putting a protractor on the hand
and moving it up), so that's helped considerably.

RH> I know the feeling too well. Is there a reason why they're only
RH> allowing Tylenol? You need what I call the "big guns" to have a bit of
RH> relief. Keep eating left handed for a while; you should be pretty good
RH> at that by now. (G)

Nothing else due to my hypertension and diabetes. Motrin is contradicted due
to my blood pressure (Motrin restricts my blood vessels while the lisonopril I
take helps to open them up) and nearly everything else is contradicted due to
my diabetes. I bleed very easily-especially nosebleeds-so I have to be very
careful with any NSAID. Tylenol, though, has always been like taking a
placebo for me. It's never worked on me my entire life. I have better luck
with asprin than Tylenol.

RH> I know, the body doesn't like anything like that. I've got them in
RH> several places and I know how you can hurt all over. The left wrist
RH> and elbow are telling me to lay off the keyboard; I will--in a few
RH> minutes. Good thing supper will be mostly recycled chicken and potato
RH> salad with another vegerable to go with them. Maybe I'll jsut rinse
 RH> some baby carrots.

My hand's humming right now, but I've had to do some typing tonight. I think
after I get off (at midnight), I'm going to run by our 24 hour Wal-Mart to get
a hot water bottle. I think a good session with that would be a blessing for
my hand...just getting it to relax.

Tonight, I had a Lean Cuisine meal. Ugh. Never again. Bland. Tomorrow, I'm
going to Sam's Club and going to buy some stuff in bulk to make sandwiches
with. I like turkey and cheese, with some crackers of some sort. I'd love to
find one of those old Thermos lunchboxes like my grandpa used to have: it had
a domed top with a Thermos in the top...an old metal lunchbox. I need to
start bringing my lunch with me...and checking my glucose levels.

RH> Look into it--and ask for a personal trainer if you can. We got a
RH> treadmill in HI because the sidewalks weren't safe (too many heaves
RH> and buckles from tree roots); I need to get back into using it more
 RH> regularly.

I'm thinking about getting a small home gym instead...but with the space
restriction of our tiny apartment, that's on hold while I research it.
However, there is a nice 24-hour gym on the way home from work...the thought
of post-work workouts (on the nights I'm not working overnight) sounds
good...it would be a good way to get all of the extra energy out and tucker me
out enough to make me sleep when I get home. :)

RH> So work on the legs for now; the wrist will come in time. Just
RH> remember that it will never be what it was before you broke it so push
RH> ups and stuff like that may have to be modified.

I've never been able to do push-ups right. I do better with other exercises.
I've been doing some light calithenics (sp!), such as steam engines (Steve
knows about those, I'm sure :), situps with my hands at the sides,
knee-benders, et al. I'm terribly, terribly out of shape and ashamed to admit
it. Even in the Army, when I still was a little heavy, I could run two miles
in just under 13 minutes...now, I'd have to drive. :P

RH> Are you confined to the desk or can you walk around a bit? If you can
RH> walk, a short "get up and stretch" break every so often will help.
RH> Walk around the desk, reach for the sky, bend like a palm tree in a
 RH> wind storm, etc. (G)

Actually, no, this building is pretty good-sized. If my hand could take it, I
could do some light housekeeping to make the place nicer ('s what happens when
you have a bunch of guys working!), but right now, it seems anything having to
do with pressure on the hand in any form is out.

RH> I'm still on a low pork diet since Steve isn't fond of it. I read
RH> recipes like this and just sigh. (G)

Aww, if I'd known, I'd not post it. I /LOOOOOOOVE/ pork. In fact, watched a
"Good Eats" episode where Alton showed how to make your own pulled pork...so
let's see...does he like chicken? This sounds awfully good, but awfully high
in carbohydrates for me.

Title: Egyptian Chickpea and Orzo Soup
Categories: Soups, Beans, Noodles, Chicken, Egyptian
      Yield: 4 Servings

      6 c Chicken broth
           Or vegetable broth
      2 c Water
      6 Garlic cloves -- thinly
           Sliced
    1/2 Onion -- chopped
  1 1/2 c Cooked chickpeas --
           -drained
1 ts Finely chopped parsley --
           Optional
           Salt and pepper -- to
           -taste
      6 oz Orzo
           Or other small soup pasta
2 Lemons -- cut into wedges

Combine the broth, water, garlic and onion in a saucepan. Bring to a
boil, then simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until the
  onion softens.

Add the chickpeas and continue to cook for 15 minutes or so, until the
chickpeas are very soft and tender, the soup well-flavored, the
garlic and onions soft. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the
  parsley.

Meanwhile, cook the orzo or other pasta in rapidly boiling salted
  water until tender; drain.

Serve the soup in bowls, ladled over the orzo, each bowl with a wedge
or two of lemon to squirt in, then leave to impart its lemony flavor
  from the rind. Serves 4.

Notes: "If you have no orzo, use spaghetti broken into short lengths
before cooking. And if you have any of the ends you've snapped off
asparagus, this is a good place to use them. Jut cut them into thin
rounds and add to the soup about 5 minutes before serving. They are
  delicious with the chickpeas."
