====================================================================
Hi Janis,

JK> Hope you and Steve and everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend - we
JK> spent ours with Ron's family on Sunday and then with our daughter and

We had a pretty quiet week end, mostly the usual Saturday/Sunday
activities. Monday Steve did some yard work and I did my usual Monday
stuff (laundry, pick up from week end, etc). We also went over to the PX
to replace my watch--another from the same line but at the cost, they're
easy enough to replace every year or so.

JK> SIL and the kids on Monday so we we we were pretty beat by the time it
JK> was over :) Getting too old I guess haha :)

I know the feeling. I can get wiped out in a few hours.

JK> We made a stop on the way to Ron's family's in Grahamsville at a
JK> Wendy's out of desperation because we were starving.. we hadn't eaten
JK> "starving" so we figured a quick burger wouldn't hurt (we hadn't had
JK> _long_ one). We ordered two "cheeseburgers" .. omigod.. now we haven't
JK> eaten fast food in YEARS.. and we haven't bought supermarket beef in
JK> months.. but this was absolutely unbelievable!!! It was like eating
JK> glue. Literally, I couldn't make myself finish it. It didn't taste
JK> like beef.. it had NO taste! All I could think of was the flavor of
JK> the grass-fed hamburger that we'd been eating now and how incredibly
JK> good it was compared to that garbage. What a lesson that was :) :)

Why do you think I usually get chicken at fast food places? (G) I don't
think I've had a fast food hamburger in probably 15 years or more.

JK> > doesn't fry too much stuff--hasn't for the past some odd years but
JK> their > diets could still use a major revamp. Too much white stuff &
 JK> sweets.

JK> It's not easy changing diets at that age... I know my Dad had a rough
JK> time with that.. he was fighting it until the end, sadly enough :(
JK> Now my Mom on the other hand, when she found out she had diabetes at
JK> around age 50, changed her diet and was able to control the diabetes
JK> by watching what she ate.. and to this day she still controls it with

Makes sense to watch it if you need to. My mom just doesn't want to give
up the way she's eaten for all her life. She's made a couple of minor
changes in what she eats but not enough to be signifigant.

JK> medication and doesn't need injections. She was a nurse, but I still
JK> find that amazing. I know not everyone can do that though. She's also
JK> now at the mercy of the place where she's living sadly enough.. the
JK> 'assisted living' retirement home.. but she lets them know when she's
JK> not happy with their menu (g).

That doesn't help but at least she lets them know she's not happy. I'm
half surprised a place like that doesn't have a dietitcian who
supervises meals better.

>> is still major surgery no matter how you "cut" it .. :( But I am glad
>> that Mom didn't have to have normal surgery.

JK> > (G) The laproscopic is the "normal" surgery for the gall bladder
JK> these > days. I know what you mean. The recovery time for the
JK> laproscopic is > shorter but the patient still has to be careful not
 JK> to overdo. I got

JK> Sure, you feel great but you could do some harm to yourself if you
JK> push too soon :) I did the same thing when I had my appendix out.. I
JK> was playing Alice Adams in a play, had this stupid appendix attack the
JK> night after opening night and 5 days later I was trying to convince
JK> the director that I was ok, I could do the show (grin)

I've still got my appendix. One of our girl's friends had his taken out
laproscopically when he was in high school, about 13 years ago. Of
course being young, he bounced back fast. I think we're all somewhat
antsy to get back into our normal routine when something like that
happens so we do try to push things a bit.

>> Yes, heard that somewhat as well, and it makes sense. Dad never talked
>> about the food too much.. I guess it was that bad haha.. not worth

JK> > My dad's least favorite time was in mid December 1944 to early
JK> January, > 1945. They had 3 weeks of meals alternating between spam
 JK> and canned
JK> > corned beef. Even Christmas dinner was one or the other.

JK> Well Dad did mention that great spam, how could not talk about how
JK> they creamed it so well haha :) and served it on toast (grin) but they
JK> didn't call it toast IIRC (bg).

I know, my dad never talked about it.

>> though ;) He talked about the war alot though.. My Mom has a CD he
>> recorded before he died, of his experiences on the Quincy when it
>> sank.. She's going to send it to me and I can't wait to get it. What a

JK> > Very much so! My dad wrote up his memoirs 5 years ago, at Rachel's
JK> > prodding. He also edited a booklet written by one of his
JK> commanders; > we've got copies of both.

JK> That is so neat :) I really can't wait to hear that CD.. it's been so
 JK> long since I've heard dad's voice..

Like me, reading the book--you'll want to laugh and cry at the same time
over parts of it.

JK> Well, it's not really humid here like in Houston that's for sure :)
JK> it's up in the mountains 'almost' though these aren't really
JK> mountains, and we aren't quite "in" them anyway (g). We're "around

I know, I lived in the mountains the first 22 years of my life.
Techincally, they aren't but I think most folks would rather call them
that than a dissected plateau. (G)

JK> Going over to Grahamsville on Sunday (about an hour and 3/4 away to
JK> Ron's Aunt's house) the elevation was incredible.. beautiful to see..
JK> but we've seen higher actually in places in Binghamton at a Christmas
JK> tree farm :) Just neat views really :)

Yes, I agree--for the most part. (G) Some views aren't so neat.

>> Susquehanna runs right past us, down the hill from our house. We

 JK> > Thought so.

JK> It floods the area a bit now and then.. I feel bad for those people in
JK> the low lying areas.. we're above all those areas. One or two parts
JK> of our property get a little soupy though :)

I think that's why Dad built the house where he did--it's high enough
above the Delaware that he does't get flooded. They may be cut off from
town from time to time but they stay dry.

>> 'bad' snow storms in the region but rarely escape the cold fronts the
>> region experiences.. well, I don't think this year anyone in the
>> eastern part of the US has escaped them :( But for all my complaining,
