That's about what I was getting at... they may well be primitive, but
it's actually much more civilised than those who would claim that
title.

I think it's the bitterness I don't like?  I suspect I'm just hopeless
on this one... ;)

Dunno if I've ever tried either of them... there's been a long line of
candidates put forward, especially by my brothers... so far nothing has
even come close to something I'd drink, then, much less again... ;/ 
But, if hops are* the problem, possibly low-hopped would help, maybe...

We do have a fair bit of red meat, as well as veggies and such that have
good iron content... My real problem there is that I can't tolerate the
iron supplements by mouth... it gives me grief in the digestive system,
so I can't take it long enough to make a difference when things get too
low.  So far I haven't needed a return treatment, but I just never know.
I'm more of a border-line anemic, and my body tries to compensate by
making lots of extra platelets... which fortunately don't seem to be
extra sticky, or I'd be in bigger trouble.

Fortunately, with a taste for expensive scotch, I'm able to portion it
out such that it lasts long enough to NOT kill the bank balance.  A
fifth will last me easily a year or more... even if I'm sharing it with
one of my brothers on occasion.  I just don't drink a lot of any sort of
booze or other spirits... I simply enjoy it when I do* imbibe.  :)
