========================
ML> So the local experts should be telling growers to hoard water
 ML> and grow nothing!
GJ> Use water sparingly and economically (drip feed rather than spraying)
GJ> and grow Shiraz and other reds. Leave the SBs to the Kiwis.

Do the reds intrinsically take less water than whites, or is
an unconcentrated white more acceptable than an unconcentrated red?

GJ> There is a Bojangles restaurant in Alice Springs; it is combined with
GJ> a bar where young people live it up in the evenings and listen to
GJ> music. I ate good camel pie there. Anything like your Bojangles?

Nope.

GJ> any other chains within USA which are based outside USA - for example
GJ> the good Mexican "Pollo Feliz", or Canadian ones?

Yep, bunches of them. Wagamama, Angelo Pietro, Pret a Manger
come to mind. I think Sbarro, the most awful of the sub shops,
might also be of foreign origin. Not to mention that the
Europeans have a stranglehold on the grocery market on the
east coast. Not to mention Tim Horton's and The Keg.

ML> surprise at phenomena such as MRSA ... bunch of idiots, not least
ML> the medical (and worse, the near-medical) professions.
GJ> I agree with you 100%. [Shakes head in disbelief. Did I say that?]

Hum ... I must be wrong then ...

=

GJ> I can probably blame my Scottish forebears, or growing up during the
GJ> Great Depression, but my main rant is not anti-USA, but objection to
GJ> profligate use of non-renewable resources.

Your most visible, audible rant is, though!

GJ> In this, Australia is even worse than USA on a per capita basis.

And you beat up on your countrymen when?

 China argues that as "Western"
GJ> countries (which in this instance includes Australia, which is to the
GJ> South) used lots of petroleum to achieve their present high standard
GJ> of living, why shouldn't China?

"Because you don't have to" has a good ring to it.

   This reasoning is understandable, but
GJ> not morally justifiable in the present and anticipated climate.

They, of course, would point out that it's your morals, not
theirs. Their responsibility is to feed their own temperature-
hardy billions. Not that I'm greatly in favor of that, but I
will point out that they've made some progress with the one
child per family initiative and can't be said to consistently
ignore social and environmental issues.

GJ> As cost is the main mover in such matters, world fuel price increases
GJ> will result in greater effort being spent on more fuel efficient means
GJ> of transport than cars - or jet planes. Roll on the trains and
GJ> trolley-buses, running on nuclear generated electricity!

This doesn't bother me, but ...

ML> In many respects I'm with you, but not until the problem of
ML> human error is conquered will I be comfortable with substantial
ML> reliance on nuclear-generated electricity. The first step would
ML> be to pay plant operators commensurate with their responsibilities
GJ> Many more deaths per kWhr of energy used result from human error of
GJ> car drivers than that of nuclear station builders and operators.

Who can quantify the long-term damage of what incidents there
have been? And the costs of keeping spent fuel pent up forever?
And when the one big disaster happens, how can one amortize that?

GJ> There are dangers attached to all forms of power. We should choose
GJ> the source of power which kills the fewest people. I could probably
GJ> find the death rate associated with the toxic emissions from vehicles
GJ> and cooking stoves (WHO gives 1.6 million per year just from indoor air
GJ> pollution), and compare that with the death rate resulting from
GJ> accidents at nuclear power sites, but I believe that the rate per
GJ> kiloWatthour of power would be far, far lower in the nuclear-powered
 GJ> world.

These statistics don't take lots of things into consideration.
Now, I have always said that the way to conquer cancer is to
ban the internal combustion engine, but with plant emissions,
that could skew things a bit, especially if the plants became
the prevalent source of power. I'm still looking at wind power
and solar cells.

GJ> The legs were crunchy, the tiny bodies not so much. If they were
GJ> deep-fried to crunchy bodies I suspect the legs would be charcoal.

Why do you imagine that? I've had baby squid fried to a complete
crunch, the tentacles very fried but by no means black, the
bodies quite fried and crisp.

GJ> The deep-fried whole, coin-sized crabs I have eaten in Manila had a
GJ> similar divine combination of texture and flavour.

We call those oyster crabs, because they're found as parasites
in oyster beds. Unfortunately, they're not commercially available
here.

ML> Those and the shinkansen. As I recall, Mr. Ramen (not his real name)
ML> died recently and was universally mourned.
GJ> Like most great inventions, the Shinkansen was developed from earlier
GJ> work done by others, notably the Germans, who had electric trains
 GJ> running at 130 mph before WW1.

And ramen harks back to Chinese long-life noodles, whose
texture comes from a deep-fry before boiling.

 GJ> I recently heard a description of
GJ> the playing of Debussy by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, under Claudio
GJ> Abado as, "polished, but not glossy". An interesting expression.

Yep, a softer sound. Polished to a matte finish, as it were. The
Philadelphia Orchestra used to be known for that sound.
