Ärende: food, fast & poor
=========================
Hi Janis,

JK> > I know the feeling. I can get wiped out in a few hours.

JK> Yep..It was nice getting to visit though.

As usual; any time you can see the grand kids and other family is nice.

>> the grass-fed hamburger that we'd been eating now and how incredibly
>> good it was compared to that garbage. What a lesson that was :) :)

JK> > Why do you think I usually get chicken at fast food places? (G) I
JK> don't > think I've had a fast food hamburger in probably 15 years or
 JK> more.

JK> Normally, we don't eat at fast food places, we do go to Chinese
JK> restaurants pretty often around here though (g).

We go to some from time to time but not that often. A couple of weeks
ago we went to a Chinese buffet that we've been to before. OK stuff, a
lot of battered and fried, lots of stuff made for American tastes and it
looked like menuedo in the one pot.

>> find that amazing. I know not everyone can do that though. She's also
>> now at the mercy of the place where she's living sadly enough.. the
>> 'assisted living' retirement home.. but she lets them know when she's
>> not happy with their menu (g).

JK> > That doesn't help but at least she lets them know she's not happy.
 JK> I'm > half surprised a place like that doesn't have a dietitcian who
 JK> > supervises meals better.

JK> No, these places, as far as I've seen at least, don't seem to care
JK> about things like that. And the place she is at isn't an inexpensive
JK> one.. it costs a fortune.. I think she's paying something like
JK> 3,500-4,000 a month to live there? Something like that.. Anyway, the

They should have somebody there that can look after the food needs. Lots
of poeple that live in places like that have dietary constraints that
need to be observed. I'm surrpised they don't.

JK> cook they've recently hired told her that he was trained in a cooking
JK> school, and was looking forward to creating meals for people that were
JK> interesting, etc. but Mom said so far it's been quite a
 JK> disappointment.. i.e., "out of a can". :(

Sounds like he was trained all right--trained to use a can opener. (G)

JK> > course being young, he bounced back fast. I think we're all somewhat
JK> > antsy to get back into our normal routine when something like that
JK> > happens so we do try to push things a bit.

JK> Sure.. the worst is over after all (grin)

Or so you think. If you over do, the follow up can be worse than the
original problem.

>> January, > 1945. They had 3 weeks of meals alternating between spam
>> and canned
>> > corned beef. Even Christmas dinner was one or the other.

>> Well Dad did mention that great spam, how could not talk about how
>> they creamed it so well haha :) and served it on toast (grin) but they
>> didn't call it toast IIRC (bg).

JK> > I know, my dad never talked about it.

 JK> Lol :)

OTOH, you should have tasted what Dave S. made last summer. That was
really good!

>> That is so neat :) I really can't wait to hear that CD.. it's been so

JK> > Like me, reading the book--you'll want to laugh and cry at the same
JK> time > over parts of it.

 JK> Oh I'm sure that's true.

It's the nature of things like that.

>> it's up in the mountains 'almost' though these aren't really
>> mountains, and we aren't quite "in" them anyway (g). We're "around

JK> > I know, I lived in the mountains the first 22 years of my life.
JK> > Techincally, they aren't but I think most folks would rather call

JK> Lol, that's the truth.. and when you see them on the horizon they sure
 JK> look "mountainous" :)

And living in them, you know they are! My brother's house (the one my
parents first lived in when they moved to Margaretville) butts right
up against the side of one.

>> but we've seen higher actually in places in Binghamton at a Christmas
>> tree farm :) Just neat views really :)

 JK> > Yes, I agree--for the most part. (G) Some views aren't so neat.

JK> Yep.. true. And certainly in Binghamton.. and in sullivan cty.

And other places. (G)

JK> But for neat.. Ron's dad used to love pointing out the places in the
JK> Roundout resevoir where you could see top of the bridge under the
JK> water.. his family had a farm there long ago before his grandfather
JK> died. The farm was in Eureka before they flooded it for the resevoir
JK> (that story always amazed me. Whole towns, just gone)

I know; Arena & Shavertown are underneath the Pepactin. That was
finished in 1955 so in the droughts of the early 60s, we could still see
parts of the towns as the reservoir wasn't very full yet.
