Ärende: ANY GARDENS? 80618
===========================
-=> Quoting Dave Sacerdote to Glen Jamieson <=-

DS> We're at the very start of a heat wave today; it was 32 C
 DS> today. Tomorrow is forcast to be 35 C, and Monday 37 C +.
DS> Temps are expected to break perhaps on Tuesday.

GJ> That could be rather oppressive if the humidity is high,
GJ> but not so bad if low humidity and you have an evaporative
 GJ> cooler.

DS> I meant "tropical" in it's full meaning. When the temperature
DS> goes that high, it is normally accompanied by 70 to 80% humidity.
DS> "Swamp coolers" do nothing to alleviate that since the air is too
DS> saturated for evaporation to be an effective cooler.

Right. That is the sort of weather I experience in the Wet season in
Darwin, where I spend some time every year. It is possible to get used
to it, particularly if you use the early morning coolness for your most
vigorous activities. Last year when I was staying in Houston the
weather was like that, but I enjoyed my 6 am walks.

DS> We do use fans to draw in cooler air at night, and usually by
DS> 2300 the bedrooms are comfortable enough (though still humid
DS> and damp) for some sleep.

Ceiling fans are quiet and make sleeping without much clothing
reasonably comfortable.

 DS> - -

DS> This week is much cooler, overcast, and somewhat rainy. I'm
DS> taking the opportunity to install a drip irrigation system
DS> in the garden to eliminate the need for the sprinkler, which
DS> delivers far more water than the plants can effectively use.

Lucky you, to have water! We are having occasional winter rains here,
which is fortunate as the water use restrictions restrict the use of
sprinklers to a 4 hour period, once a week. Our main river system no
longer flows into the sea; all the water is used up before it gets to
the lakes near the mouth, and the lakes there are drying up.

      Title: (SBS) Baked Carp
 Categories: Iraqi, Fish
      Yield: 8 servings

      2 Whole carp, prepared for
           Baking
      1 lg Onion, diced
      2 lg Tomatoes, diced
      1 ts Turmeric
      1 tb Ground dried limes
           Salt and pepper to taste
           Olive oil

Place the fish in a foil-lined baking dish. Mix together the other
ingredients and spread them over the fish to cover it well. Drizzle
with a little oil and bake in a moderate oven for about half an hour.

Note: Considered by many to be a pest, carp is actually a very
popular fish in Iraq. In riverside restaurants in Baghdad you will
find the local specialty, mazguf - whole carp butterflied and crusted
with salt, set upright on sticks and cooked against an open fire.

Our cooks Huda and Amera get their fish from the Murray River which
flows through Cobram. Few Anglo-Australians would contemplate eating
it but it is one of the most common freshwater fish in the world and
  extensively farmed on other continents.

The NSW Department of Agriculture has a useful web site on preparing
  carp for eating. www.agric.new.gov.au

Recipe provided by the Iraqi ladies of Cobram, Victoria.
