A possibility. If nobody comes up with anything, I might suggest
another Clam Crawl thingy July 3-7 - people would be on their own
July 3 (I have rehearsals), go to the concert on July 4, then have
the picnic stuff on 5-6.

OK - keep that in mind, too.

The best thing about July 4 is that it's paid for by the City of
Salem. I think the budget is something like twenty or thirty grand,
half or more going to the fireworks.

Though some places, Vegas in particular, hotels have refashioned
themselves to be destinations per se. A lot of people fall for
this; I don't and don't expect that you would.

How versatile. Makes me think of a potentially really
dreary dish, kohlrabi stuffed with kohlrabi. Dave the
Sas's Thanksgiving story might resonate here (though
I know it's about rutabaga).

      Yield: 6 servings

MMMMM----AMERICAN MEASUREMENTS----
     12    Young kohlrabis
      3 oz Flour
           Lard
           Parsley
           Salt
           Pepper
           Sugar
           Marjoram

MMMMM-----FORCEMEAT
      9 oz Pork
      9 oz Veal
      3 oz Butter
      1    Breakfast roll
  1 1/4 c  Cream
      1    Egg

MMMMM----EUROPEAN MEASUREMENTS----
     12    Young kohlrabis
     80 g  Flour
           Lard
           Parsley
           Salt
           Pepper
           Sugar
           Marjoram

MMMMM-----FORCEMEAT
    250 g  Pork
    250 g  Veal
     80 g  Butter
      1    Breakfast roll
    300 ml Cream
      1    Egg

  Peel the kohlrabis and scoop out the insides. Keep some of the
  tender leaves and boil the kohlrabis together with them and
  the scooped out parts. Lift out the kohlrabis. fill them with
  the same kind of force meat as used for the vegetable marrow,
  and steam them in the oven. Make a roux of flour and lard
  seasoned with parsley and thicken the water in which the
  kohlrabis were boiled and which still contains the scooped out
  parts and the leaves. Season with salt, pepper and sour cream,
  let it boil through and serve with the stuffed kohlrabis.
