============================
Hi Janis,

JK> some > friends when we lived in NC. It ran across the road some ways
JK> ahead of > our car--thought it was a dog at first but realised it had
 JK> the wrong
JK> > form and was much bigger.

JK> That is so funny because I saw one on the way to Binghamton about 3
JK> years ago, and it struck me just the same way! just off shape at
JK> first, then I realized what I was seeing :) and yes it was much

Just like when we were in AZ--one night Deborah came home and said she'd
seen a javalina just down the street from our house. She thought it was
just a dog until it moved under a street light and she saw the pig-ish
form.

JK> bigger.. I almost wanted to hit myself on the head. Watched that guy
JK> scoot down the right over the side rails of the road or whatever you
JK> call the thingys on the side of the road, and jump down the hill off

Guard rails (G)

 JK> into the woods... :)

Yes, they do move fast when they want to. I think that's what surprises
people as much as anything--those critters can move quite fast for their
size.

JK> > "new baby" cash gift a couple of days later and used part of it to
JK> > a stuffed black bear toy. In turn, before Robert was born, she went
JK> to > a "Build A Bear Workshop" and made him a black bear.

JK> That's neat :) That bear toy must have been a favorite of Rachel's
 JK> (grin)...

I think so. (G) We named the original one "Blackie" (how original) so in
turn, the one she "built", she named "Schwartz" (German for black). At
the store, she did a "birth certificate" which had a blank for the
recipient's name. She filled it in with the name she and David had
thought they were going to use for the baby--and ended up not using.
So, at some point, she may probably do a revised certificate. (G)

>> house had warned us all about the bears and scared the dickens out of
>> us all

JK> > When our girls were 5 and (almost) 7, we camped one night along the
JK> > please secure (in the vehicle) all food because of bears--our girls
JK> were > a bit scared. We didn't see any bears but did see some deer in
JK> back of > our tent the next morning.

JK> Bah.. deer.. dragonfodder Lol.. Just kidding (g) I think probably any
JK> "large wild" animals that I'd run into when I was little would have
JK> shocked the socks off me to speak :) You know, those things were only
 JK> in cartoons afterall :)

I don't know, I grew up seeing lots of deer, etc in our yard. We knew
there were bears in the area (hunters would get several each year) but
they didn't seem to be active until some years ago. My mom made her
first sauerbraten out of a venison roast she was given--it had a very
gamey taste but not enough to deter me from trying sauerbraten again.

>> Here are some Luau recies I found.. might be fun to try at the picnic
>> if I can find the ingredients.. the don't look too hard to find at

JK> > Looking them over, they look pretty good. Kalua pork can be done in
JK> the > crock pot too.

JK> ah bummer.. don't have a crock pot.. mine died a terrible death years
JK> ago.. it died by a gibbet of it own divising.. it fell and shattered
JK> into a number of pieces on a day when my hands weren't cooperating to
JK> stop it from falling (g).. this was early on. I should buy a new one..
JK> I liked it, it was handy.. :)

I'm surprised you didn't replace it. I'm on #3 since getting the first
as a wedding present. The first one died; #2 was sold to a friend in
Germany and...............this is the first one I have with a removeable
liner. It can be used as a deep fryer/stock pot by taking out the
liner. The removeable liner came in handy once; we loaned the crock pot
out once for a unit fund raising event. In that time, the liner was
dropped and broke--but we were able to replace just that part (actually,
the unit bought it).

I've also got a small (about 1.5 quart) crock pot, thanks to Carol. She
has talked so much about using hers so much..........it's handy with
just the 2 of us. I've got a small beef roast in it now, with onion, red
pepper, garlic, tomato sauce and Itialian herbs. Only down side to mine
is that it has no temperature control.

>> Lomi Lomi Salmon
>> Aku Poke (Raw fish with seaweed)

>> Ethnic Foods of Hawaii by Ann Corum.

JK> > One of my favorite books for Hawaiian cooking; it's in my
JK> collection. > Poke is usually done with ahi and pepper flakes.

JK> Great to know.. I had no way to know that.. sometimes it seems at
JK> least half the stuff on the internet is complete baloney.. :)

Just post your questions, etc here--probably at least one person has a
copy of the cookbook in question. (G)

>> Oven Kalua Pork
>> Yield: 6 Servings

 JK> > ONO! (delicious)

JK> Really? Ok.. Guess we HAVE to do that one!!!!!! Think it's
 JK> possible???? :) :)

We can do it if you want. With the pork eating group here, I'm sure it
woudn't go uneaten. (G)

>> Chicken Long Rice
JK> > A bit of soy sauce sprinkled on it improves the taste, IMO.

JK> I'll take your word for it.. you been there and done that.. (laugh)

It's rather bland otherwise, even with the ginger.

>> Hawaiian Fish with Thai Banana Salsa Yield: 6 Servings

JK> > Most fish at luaus is less fancy--usually a white fish cooked in a
JK> basic > white sauce and a few herb added.

 JK> Makes sense..

It's a time saver with all the food prep that has to be done for those
events.

>> LauLau

JK> > Good but laulau has also come to mean just the steamed greens.

 JK> Ok, sounds good (grin)

That's easier to handle, again, with the amount of food they do.

JK> hehe.. found out the Windsor Farmers Market is about 3 houses down the
JK> street from my house BTW.. outrageously neat I think.. they're doing
JK> it on the Village Square :) That's were the square is.. about three
JK> houses from us.. We're on the corner of College and Main Street, and
JK> the Village Square is on Main.. (of course)..

OK, it will be fun to check out. We've changed our reservation at the
B&B to reflect our plans to leave some time on Sunday. Since we can't
check in until after 3 pm on Thursday, we'll probably swing by your
house first to put the lasagne into one of your fridges. I'll probably
have some sauce as well, with more to be made Saturday with the meat
balls and bracciole.

Catch you later,
Ruth
