Yep, all kinds of flowers (and berries) have adapted to the short
season and thrive with all the sunlight. My strawberries and
raspberries are in bloom and about a week apart. Back home the two
seasons are a month apart.

There is some beef farming in the northern Alberta, but the dairy
herds start in the Peace River Country and my dairy products come
from a central supplier based out of Edmonton. We had a dairy here
briefly but it went broke; the cost of importing hay was higher than
importing the finished products. As well the barns had to be heated
for months at a time. There is one single chicken and egg farm in
Hay River plus one market garden. There used to be a piggery in Fort
Smith but it too went belly up. Our agriculture in the NWT except
for the two places in Hay River is strictly a few small home gardens
and a dozen horses at a single riding stable. Our government does
not even have an Ag Dept.

We should be looking at greenhouses especially near the oil refinery
in Norman Wells that generates a lot of waste heat. And get a
federally inspected abattoir set up so that we could export wild
game. There is also huge potential in harvesting morel mushrooms
here.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Creole Steak
 Categories: Diabetic, Rice, Vegetables, Beef, Cajun
      Yield: 8 Servings
 
      2 lb Lean round steak
    1/4 c  Flour
      2 ts Salt
      2 ts Paprika
    1/2 ts Pepper
      3 tb Vegetable oil
      1 c  Onion; chopped
    1/3 c  Green pepper; chopped
      1 cn (16 ounces) tomatoes;
    1/2 c  Raw rice;
      1 c  Condensed beef broth
      1 c  Water
 
  Directions: Cut steak into 7 equal serving pieces. Mix flour,
  salt, paprika, and pepper, dredge meat in mixture. Heat oil in a
  large frying pan. Lightly brown onions and green peppers and
  remove from oil. Brown meat in remaining oil. Cover meat with
  onions and green peppers. Cut up tomatoes and add with their
  liquid to meat.  Sprinkle rice into pan.; add broth and water. Mix
  thoroughly.  Bring to a boil, turn heat down, and cover tightly.
  Simmer 1 1/2 hours or until meat is tender, stirring occasionally.
