CS> Smokies are in SC BTW but there's a chain or so that for all but a

I remember that from school, ages ago... I'd forgotten exactly where
the Smokies were, but I do know the Blue Ridge... and Appalachia...
Besides, my NC and SC ancestors were pretty much all coastal, too. ;)
(That was another part of the same grandmother's heritage...)

CS> Well, they might as well be differnt countries in some aspects! The
CS> settlers were very different along those routes. The smokies were the
CS> earlier path west before they found easier ones and then folks stopped
CS> traveling that way. Hence a bit of difference and you can see where
CS> stuff dates back to an almost elizabethan england in spots there. (Not
CS> really, she was too early but the backwards segmnts came that way then
 CS> got isolated a bit).

True, there were a lot of Scots that came shortly after the Jacobean
stuff... and many of them gravitated further inland into the mountains.
And there were some of the earlier settlers that went inland. I have a
very interesting book called _Albion's_Seed_ by David Hackett Fischer
that talks about the four different folkways of British settlers into
America [East Anglia to Massachusetts (Puritans 1629-41), South of
England to Virginia (Distressed Cavaliers and indentured servants
1642-75), North Midlands to the Delaware (Quakers 1675-1725), and
Borderlands to the Backcountry (Scots-Irish/North Britain 1717-1775)].
He describes distinctive customs in 24 different areas of life that
characterize each different set of people and shows how they simply
brought their old ways of life with them as they migrated, everything
from speech patterns to songs to attitudes to FOOD ([g]). I just pulled
it down off the shelf to make sure I got the different groups right...
it's a wonderful thick book (900 pages) which I read from cover to cover
back when I got it nearly twenty years ago... :) It was doubly
fascinating to me since I have some ancestry in each of the different
folkways... And as you say, the last group ended up with some major
pockets of isolation that preserved more of the original group's ways.

CS> Hooger river is a real place. It's about 45 mins drive from Seneca
 CS> SC.

Next you'll be telling us that the Waltons were your next-door
neighbors... ;>
