No sure when I learned it or how I learned it but I've known both
versions for years.

Our school's basement held the music room until a major remodeling &
extra wing were added in the early 70s. Other than that, elementary
classrooms, cafeteria, gymnasium/auditorium and offices were on the
first floor; 5th & 6th grade in one wing of the 2nd floor, junior high
in another wing. High school had the main section. Then we merged with
another school just before my sophomore year. That sent middle school
and K to the other school; we had grades 1-4 and 9-12. By the time I
graduated, middle school was 6-8 and back on our campus while K-5 were
on the other one. High schoolers were in the same area plus the old
junior high wing. Middle school had the old elementary class rooms. They
also had an earlier lunch hour and didn't participate in all of the pep
rallies, assemblies, etc that the high school had.

I spent all 13 years in the same building, having one class in a
portable on those grounds. All of my siblings spent a year or more in
off campus buildings. Not the fanciest of schools nor a huge assortment
of classes but a well rounded education overall. I got out just as they
were "modeernising" some of the English classes; I think hisotry
followed suit to some extent.
