Apart from social drinks in the private bar of the hotel where we
stayed in Warsaw, I haven't entered a bar just to drink, for many
years.  Mainly, in Australia and some other countries, it has been
primarily for the "counter lunch", of course accompanied by drinks.

In your country is it usual for meals to be served in bars?  Here, as
almost every hotel has poker machines, the serving of good, cheap
meals encourages gamblers to stay and feed the one-armed bandits.  I
don't waste my money that way, but I do on occasions take advantage of
the cheap meals.  Some hotels have "Pensioner Specials", a smaller
than standard serve with a glass of wine or beer, for $8 or so.  I
have taken advantage of those, from time to time.

  The days my two brothers and I spent working at my Uncle Jimmy's
  noodle factory are times I remember with much affection.
  
  At midday my brothers and I would clamber into Uncle's van, and
  within 10 minutes would fall out of it at his mother's house. As soon
  as the van entered Mrs Jang's street, you could smell the sweet aroma
  of jasmine rice steaming and spluttering in the rice cooker, and the
  musty, complex scents seeping out of Mrs Jang's kitchen cupboards:
  pungent dried Chinese mushrooms; half-used packets of dried beancurd
  sheets, held together with wooden pegs; the pungent aroma of harm yee
  (dried fish); the unmistakable liquorice fragrance of star anise and
  dusty cinnamon quills. The cupboard tops always displayed rows of
  sticky-rimmed bottles of soy sauce, sesame oil and sherry.
  
  Once we were all sitting down at the table, Mrs Jang would serve each
  of us with a bowl of steaming-hot rice topped with two fried eggs and
  strewn with chillies and oyster sauce. The egg yolks were soft and
  the brightest yellow; the whites were firm and crunchy on the bottom.
  Such simple, hearty fare, yet so completely satisfying.
  
  Devouring my meal, I would survey Mrs Jang's humble abode and quietly
  notice Ah Pau, Jimmy's father's mother. Ah Pau was about 90 years of
  age and reminded me of a china doll. She had the whitest of hair,
  neatly combed and held back from her face with a simple band. Her
  finely etched complexion told a thousand stories and wore a thousand
  experiences; her very essence was family. Ah Pau's bound feet were
  adorned with black patent leather shoes -like doll's shoes. Around
  the house, white plastic bags lay scattered in every corner and
  peeked out of every cupboard, bringing to mind scenes of shopping in
  Chinatown: 'A kilo of BBQ pork, please. No, not that piece, I want
  the fatty piece. A packet of lup cheong, a bunch of gai choy, that
  piece of ginger looks the best, and some sweet sticky rice for later.'
