Red Car Syrah 06 - wonderful fruit on the nose, a bit
disappointing on the palate: chocolate, plums, but
sagging in the middle; finish too acid.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA - this boasts an impressive
65 IBU (IPA rates 40-odd) and is quite bitter. Very evergreeny
and grapefruity. I'm heading away from big IPAs and so the
great reviews that this gets all round are lost on me. Long
resinous finish.

Fentiman's Shandy (beer 70% and lemonade) - advertised as
less than 0.5% alcohol but seemed to have more. Very sweet
to begin but with some hop bitterness on the palate. Not
much citrus until the hoppy-oily-sweet finish. Fairly
refreshing.

Bellini Rosso Piceno 07 - kind of sour, mild tannic nose.
On the palate, lost its fruit, phenolic. Longish chemical
finish. But I spent only $6 for it, so that was no great
disaster until I discovered that elsewhere I could have
gotten it 3 for 10. Which is worse, spending $6 for a bad
wine or spending 10 for 3 bottles of it?

Big Red Shiraz 08 - plummy, with coffee notes. A little on
the sweet side. Peppery finish. Seldom do I prefer a sweeter
wine over a drier one in direct comparison, but this time I
did. Also $6.

Castano Solanera (Yecla) 05 - stems, prune on the nose,
pepper, plum. Medium finish went a little flat. A mixture of
Mourvedre, Cab S, and Garnacha Tintorera (Grenache). Parker
gave it a 91, Tanzer a 90.

Trimbach Gewurz 07 - spice including cumin (?), pear,
grapefruit, followed by apricot, honey, and an unidentified
citrusoid presence. A bit thin midpalate, with a bitterness
coming in, leading to an odd green pepper finish.

Here's what I had to say about the Pinot Evil n.v.
(Vin de Pays de l'Ile de Beaute) that I got in 2008,
versus this bottle bought in late 2010 and consumed
in April 2011:

Juicy Fruit, but who's counting. Actually, a bit more
complexity this time, a bit of mintiness, meatiness,
and raspberry Jell-O, not in the bad sense.

This came in a bottle. It was also quite a bit better
than the stuff that came in a box, but it's hard to tell
what's operating here, whether it's a selection issue
(good stuff = bottled; less good stuff = boxed), the
vintage (indeterminate in any case), aging, or just the
luck of the draw. Still a little acidy, though.
