========================================================================
Ahoy Ruth!
->
-> ->  hn> grandparent's farm was a time when
-> -> hn> all the aunts got together with my
-> -> hn> Grandmother and put up peaches,
->
-> -> Sounds like she had the trees on her property to be able to do so. Must
-> -> have been fun with all your aunts putting up the peaches--hopefully the
-> -> kitchen was sizeable. (G)
->
->  hn> Probably ( going from kid's sized memory
-> hn> here) 10 acres of peach, 10acres of pecan,
-> hn> less than an acre of apple, same for pear...
-> hn> that's all the fruit trees I remember, black walnut
-> hn> trees weren't a "grove" but there were several
->
-> Is it still intact or has the land been split up and sold off?
->
Long and sad story...When my grandmother
passed away (being preceded by my grandfather)
it was her wish that all my aunts and uncles sell
their shares of the farm to my oldest uncle( the one
who was actually still working the farm). Which they
all did. He prospered for a number of years and then
sometime in the early 70's he fell upon hard times and
ended up going bankrupt and losing the farm. It got
sold to some "investors" from New England, who
turned out to be buyers of hardwood for several
New England furniture makers...they harvested
the Pecan trees, walnuts, and fruit trees...they
doubled their money in just that alone.They then
sold the property to someone else who put up a
trailer park where the Pecan trees used to be.
First time I drove by it I cried.

-> hn> real big ones around the house. The house
-> hn> was rebuilt on the orginal foundation of the
-> hn> Plantation house that was destroyed during
-> hn> the "recent unpleasantness with the north" as
-> hn> my grandmother used to say (grin). The kitchen
->
-> I've used that expression before. Mostly to educate that the war was
-> anything but civil.
->
It was Everything but civil...and
Reconstruction was not that nice
either!

-> hn> was HUUUUGE! The kitchen table (the one we
-> hn> ate at most) was about 20 feet long, with
-> hn> chairs on the "kitchen" side (for grownups)
->
-> So they could jump up and get something from the stove easier.
->
-> hn> and a series of long benches on the "wall"
-> hn> side..where we kids all packed in. There
->
-> That's right, shove in all the kids and the left handed ones throw
-> everyone off. (G)
->
LOL the lefties all sat at one end!!
->
-> hn> was also in the center of the kitchen a
-> hn> big wooden "butcher block" table where
-> hn> meats would be cut and such. There was
-> hn> a gas stove and a big old woodburning
-> hn> stove as well. Double sinks AND a pump
-> hn> right out of the counter!! The sinks did
-> hn> have running water by the time I was
-> hn> around..but the pump still worked! and
-> hn> in the summer if you wanted Cold water
-> hn> you went and got it from the pump!
->
-> Nice! The other night as I was cleaning up, I was thinking about how
-> nice a big old farm sink would be. Then I realised--by the time we're
-> able to (if ever) build or buy our dream house and put in all the "toys"
-> we want, we'll be too old to appreciate them. So, just have to be
-> content with such as I have and work around problems like lack of space.
->
Yep...we're in the same boat!

-> -> hn> tonight when I got home from the ballpark
-> -> hn> we had a cup of soup and a slice of quiche.
-> -> hn> Both were real good and very welcome!!
->
-> -> Sounds good to me. Sometimes the simplest things are the most
-> -> satisfying.
->
-> hn> Yep! Had a day game at the ballpark on
-> hn> Memorial Day, and when I got home
-> hn> Anne made dinner for me! Hamburger
-> hn> patty and brussels sprouts! boy was
->  hn> it Goooood!
->
-> Early evening for a change?
->
Day game...starts at 1:10 and
I get home in time for a "late"
dinner!!
->
-> hn> I have today off from the ballpark and
-> hn> will go back for a day game tomorrow
-> hn> and have thursday off then work straight
-> hn> through tull 5 june, being boss two of
->  hn> those games.
->
-> But you're still enjoying it and that's what counts.
->
YEP!

-> ->  hn> into the high 50's and rarely into the 60's.
-> ->  hn> Perfect weather!!
->
-> -> We're headed for another hot and humid (both quite high) week. I'm
done
-> -> with the big cooking stuff for now but revving up the sewing machines,
-> -> serger, etc.
->
-> hn> Had a couple of showers this morning
-> hn> but mostly just cloudy and very nice
->  hn> weather...60F for a high.
->
-> We're supposed to have a low of 60 or so tomorrow night. Humidity is
-> supposed to go down tonight and have a high of about 87 on Friday, still
-> several degrees above "normal" tho.
->
-> -> hn> interesting things to do (grin).
->
-> -> Different era, different culture. He's a city kid, raised in the instant
-> -> (or less time) gratification time. He was sort of overwhelmed at my
-> -> folks last summer--all the wide open play space he could have and no
-> -> electronic games, etc. Computers there were for work, not play. You're
a
-> -> military child of a couple of generations ago but with enough "farm
-> -> raising" you knew how to entertain yourself.
->
-> hn> Yep, and as a parent I would be
-> hn> (and was) very cautious about letting
-> hn> my kids just "go out and play" without
-> hn> any adult keeping an eye on them! it's
-> hn> a very different world than the one
->  hn> I grew up in.
->
-> Same here. I was cautious with my girls but they still had a lot more
-> freedom to "run" than most of today's kids have. They didn't have as
-> much freedom as I did but that's the changes in the world. Rachel makes
-> Robert check in every so often (a set amount of time) if he's playing
-> any where other than his own (fenced in) back yard.
->
When I was a kid we were expected
to be out of the house and out of the
way unless we were called. Spent my
youth climbing trees, building forts, riding
bikes, and having a terrific time.
chat with you soon!
