-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> An old style mobile has the black and white, but only on a miniscule
GJ> screen. The main problem with emailing via phone is keying in text,

ML> You're apparently operating on the assumption that my eyes
ML> will improve to the degree required to be able to use any
ML> handheld device as a reading/writing tool. Not very likely,
 ML> I'm afraid.

That is something that I also have a problem with, but there are
phones that are intended for use by the elderly and infirm which
display words on the screen in large font.

ML> Conductivity is one of the prerequisites of metallicity,
 ML> I think.
GJ> Yes. Conductivity is also a property of some non-metals.
 ML> One of.
ML> Listen to me: "one of."
GJ> Carbon is the obvious good conductor that takes that ticket, but then
GJ> there are the semi-conductors, such as gallium, selenium, silicon.

ML> Carbon is, in at least one of its forms, one of the worst
ML> elemental conductors. Undoped crystalline carbon, aka
ML> diamond, is equal to glass in resistivity.

Yes, and in its amorphous form, carbon is quite a good conductor.

GJ> I discussed metal detectors with Liz's husband, who is in charge of
GJ> prison maintenance in Adelaide, and he assures me that they respond to
GJ> all metals, magnetic or not.

ML> Well, duh. What have I been saying? Magnetometers, in order to
ML> provide a meaningful function, have to detect levels of magneticity
ML> in metals that would qualify under common definitions of magnetism
 ML> as "nonmagnetic."

I doubt that any detectors would be designed to detect very small
ferro-magnetic properties. Ferro-magnetism would not be necessary. If
I was designing a metal detector I would equip it with an alternating
current electromagnet through which the person had to pass. That
would induce circulating currents in any metal carried, which in turn
would have an effect on the current drain of the main electromagnet,
which could be detected. If I was really nasty, I could use quite a
powerful AC field and heat up any metal carried by the suspect. There
would also be a force exerted on the metal, encouraging it to move,
like the aluminium disk in a domestic electric power meter.

ML> Visitors to the prisons are also
GJ> photographed and finger-printed and checked against records of past
GJ> resident felons. Sounds like the requirements for entering USA...
ML> Well, do we want rabble-rousing Australians to sully our shores?

I should think not! Leonore and her friend are due to sully the
shores of your fair country and rouse some rabble in about 3 months.

GJ> Thanks. I will try, as I plan to go to Darwin next month.
ML> All you have to do is call your airline and verify its
ML> policy. Even if policy forbids it, it's likely to grant
 ML> you an exemption.

Yesterday I visited our Art Gallery to see a particular exhibit, and
at the desk where visitors were required to check in back packs,
umbrellas and large bags, I asked the man if I could keep my stick
with me. He replied that not only could I keep the stick, but he
insisted on it! They didn't want people falling over in untidy heaps
around the exhibits. Possibly airports have the same outlook, as they
could be sued in case of a stickless passenger falling and being
injured. One solution would be for the airport to provide a
wheelchair and pusher as an alternative.

I am glad I don't have to run an airport. (So are the passengers.)

BTW, yesterday Kevin tried to take his trolley with 6 casks of wine
down an escalator. He lost control of the trolley, and it and he
tumbled down. He was mopped up and taken to hospital for 6 hours of
tests before being sent home at midnight. Nothing broken, and no wine
spilt and only a stitch or 2 for the cuts. He was lucky in that the
ambulance drivers were on a "go slow" strike, still doing their
duties, but refusing to charge patients, so Kevin got a free ambulance
ride. He is back to normal today.
