Hey Ruth!
->
-> -> A carpetbagger was one who moved south and took advantage of folks.
->  hn> As
-> -> I understand, a scalliwag swooped in, took advantage of people and
beat
-> -> feet out of town just before he was ridden out on a rail.
->
-> hn> Most of the carpetbaggers stayed, mostly
-> hn> because they had taken over properties, and
-> hn> businesses of the local population. To my
-> hn> aunts a Carpetbagger is lower than low, badder
-> hn> than bad and more evil than evil. They consider
-> hn> him a direct employee of the devil himself.
->
-> No surprise there. (G)
->
-> -> hn> Oh the carpetbaggers did very well for themselves
-> -> hn> during reconstruction. Much of the wealth of the
-> -> hn> South was taken by them.
->
-> -> Sounds similar to the missionaries and Hawaii.
->
-> hn> At least they married into it, but yes
-> hn> in many ways a very similar outcome.
-> hn> You won't find any Bishop Trust in
->  hn> the South however.
->
-> No Bishop Trust but enough of a Good Old Boy network in some areas that
-> outsiders have a hard time getting in.
->
In my mom's hometown, there are
still families that are not "clean" according
to the locals...they came from "up north"
after the war...funny thing is those folks are
not well liked, but if you moved there from NY
this year....you'd be welcome! Old grudges
take a long time to die in Tenn!

-> -> But only one unit is devoted to cook books. Another has sewing/quilting
-> -> etc books, most of them have school related books. A lot of those were
-> -> acquired in the last couple of years.
->
-> hn> Anne has one set of shelves full of gardening
-> hn> and flower books, I have one set full of Techie
-> hn> type photography books, another full of field
-> hn> guides and reference books so I can always
-> hn> identify what is in the photos. Another two or
-> hn> more full of cookbooks, and another full of
-> hn> watercolor art books (I'm an amateur watercolorist)
-> hn> Then there are the fiction and non fiction books!
->
-> We've got some fiction but not too much. Non fiction is a smattering of
-> various things--yearbooks, some DIY, this and that--other than the above
-> listed. I suspect I will eliminate some of the cook books before we
-> move but probably not a lot of them. Definately hold on to ethnic ones
-> tho!
->
What can I say...I have always
loved books and reading!!

-> -> hn> There are great folks as well, and they
-> -> hn> greatly outnumber the idiots on most
-> ->  hn> games. Yesterday was a "Little League
-> -> hn> Appreciation Day" so LOTS of families
-> ->  hn> and kids, had a GREAT time!
->
-> -> Did you see yourself as you were as a kid? The wide eyed wonderment
of a
-> -> major league ball park, the taste of a ball park hot dog, maybe an up
-> -> close glimpes of your hero..................?
->
-> hn> In all my youth I only saw one pro
->  hn> game...at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
->
-> I've seen 2--at Shea Stadium. Yes, with a hot dog or two but not much
-> more than those and a drink. Not like the garlic fries I had at U of H
-> games. (G)
->
->
-> hn> 4th and 5th grades we were in South
-> hn> Carolina and there was a minor league
->  hn> team (probably single A) nearby...but
-> hn> I never got in to see a game, though we
-> hn> did (a group of us kids) hang around the
-> hn> parking lot by the outfield fences hoping
-> hn> to grab a homerun ball to use ourselves
->  hn> for sandlot play.
->
-> Were you ever successful at getting one? We could have gone to Sand
-> Gnats games in Savannah. Here we have a choice of the Durham Bulls or
-> Zebulon Mud Cats. Only pro team in the area is hockey--the Hurricanes
-> but lots of college teams.
->
There's a whole story about that!
We used to go and get a ball once
in a while when someone clobbered
one over the wall...then the team
hired highschool kids to fetch the
balls back, I think they got 50cents
a ball...So the highschool kids would wait
until us little kids had found and grabbed
the ball...then they'd take it away from
us and go collect the $$. So one day we
got the smart idea to set up a "net"...two
or three kids in the parking lot to grab the ball
and then immediately throw it to the
"cutoff" kid who relayed it quickly
to another kid who threw it to
the last kid who hopped on his
bike and hightailed it out of there.
We got several balls that way until
the big kids started to break our bikes
which ended the whole enterprise.
chat with you soon!
