Everyone gets something out of it - parents, me, kids, airlines.  In
Darwin, Perth or Brisbane I take the kids on local public transport,
and teach them where to get on and off buses.  That could be useful to
them.  Their parents usually drive everywhere with their children (the
spoilt brats!), but as I get free public transport in most places, I
use that.

It is fun, usually, even though some parents get a bit nervous about
leaving me in charge.

I often get them to make me lunch, such as:-

      Title: Teenager's Survival Late-Night Saviour
 Categories: Main dish, Snacks, Easy
      Yield: 1 Servings
 
      1 pk Two-minute noodles
           Vegetables; raw, chop fine
      2 c  Couscous
      2 c  Water; boiling
           Cheese; grated
 
  Fill the kettle & turn it on. Boil a large pot of water. When
  boiling, add the noodles & vegetables, but not the flavour sachet
  from the noodles. Cook for about 2 minutes. Drain & let stand.
  
  Put the couscous in a bowl. When the kettle has boiled, add the
  boiling water to the couscous & cover. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  
  Drain the couscous & add to the noodle mixture. Mix through. Then
  stir in the flavour sachet from the noodle packet.
  
  Sprinkle cheese on top & serve.
