Ärende: LOCOMOTIVE RIDES 10610
==============================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> visited him last year, where he lives in a town near Vienna. At that
GJ> time he had just derailed a steam locomotive again, but that time it
GJ> was a model that went too fast for him to catch. He has since fitted
GJ> radio controls of throttle, reversing and whistle.

DD> Was it "live steam" or an electrick simulacrum? Modellers in this area
DD> are doing live steam locomotive from 1:48 scale through 1:29 (G scale)
DD> and larger (outdoors) Garden scale examples.

Definitely live steam! He made it in his basement workshop. I was
there for his 80th birthday. As he normally starts the day with his
first beer at 10 am, and finishes it with red wine at 10 pm, he is a
bit dangerous to be around. On my first evening with him last year I
fell over on my way back to our hotel, but that was not my fault. The
footpaths in that Medieval town vary in width from 2 metres to 1/2 a
metre, and it was dark and raining. Apart from a few bruises I wasn't
hurt. Leonore made some unkind comments, but she fell over under
similar circumstances later, in Prague.

DD> Saturday I made a delivery to our Pana (IL) store and found that they
DD> have hired a Brit named Derek as a Parts Sales Manager - the
DD> temperature outside was 98xF/37xC and he commented that he was enjoying
 DD> the "lovely warm weather".
DD> When I said "You remind my of my friend Glen, in Adelaide." He
 DD> rejoined "I'm not an Aussie, I'm a Pom".
DD> So, I had to explain your apparently irrational affection for hot
DD> weather was my reference. Bv)=

GJ> We often get pasty white Poms escaping their damp, dark island, who
GJ> have a craving for the bright Australian sun. They come here, strip
GJ> off and lie on the beach. Inevitably within minutes they turn
 GJ> lobster-red.

DD> Don't/didn't you have facial lesions caused by exposure to that same
DD> "bright Australian sun"? Maybe you should serve as an example to them.
 DD> Bv)=

I do live in the World's leading skin cancer country. Every year or
two I get about 20 incipient cancers frozen off, and in the past I
have had more developed cancers cut out or burnt. Most of the still
more or less living people I know of my age have had skin cancers cut
out. We didn't know the danger in later life that would result from
youthful sunburns. Modern kids are far better protected, with sun
block and protective clothing. At school, children are not allowed
outside unless they are wearing wide brimmed hats. I emailed the
photos taken immediately after my facial surgery to my grandson, as an
awful warning to him what could happen if he stayed out in the sun.

An American photographer, on arrival in Australia, and stepping out
into the glare of summer sun, exclaimed that the country was two stops
over-exposed! Australian cine-photographers have learnt to deal with
such high contrast conditions, so have a reputation for that.

DD> We are looking at a forecast of 40C for today - a record if we get
 DD> there. FEH!!!

Take it easy, and keep hydrated.

      Title: Light Summer Salad
 Categories: Salads, Non-dairy
      Yield: 4 servings

      1 Hydroponic butter/oak
           -lettuce, washed, drained
           -and leaves separated
      1 Red coral hydroponic lettuce
           -washed, drained and leaves
           -separated
    1/2 Punnet cherry tomatoes,
           -halved
    1/2 Punnet yellow teardrop
           -tomatoes, halved
      1 md Lebanese cucumber, sliced
           -thickly, then quarter each
1 sm Red onion, sliced thinly
    1/4 c Sliced shallots
      4 sm Kebab/pita bread
           -: DRESSING
    1/3 c Lemon juice
3 T extra virgin olive oil
1 T white or white wine vinegar
      1 ts finely chopped lemongrass

Soak lemongrass in vinegar for an hour or so to infuse the flavour of
the lemongrass into the vinegar. Crisp the bread for 6-8 minutes at
180^C. Break into small pieces. Arrange the lettuce leaves in a
large salad bowl. Toss remaining salad ingredients with the half
the crispy bread pieces in the centre of the lettuce leaves. Serve
the remaining crisp bread pieces in a small bowl. Combine all the
dressing ingredients in a small screw-top bottle and shake well.
Shake the dressing and pour over the salad immediately before
  serving

This salad dressing is also a fabulous dressing for fish. If the
yellow teardrop tomatoes are unavailable, use extra cherry tomatoes.
