====================
Hi Sean,

RH> You're probably thinking of Harker Heights, just east of Fort
RH> Hood/Killeen. While we were stationed there in the mid 80s, one of my
RH> aunts came to visit--and she got a ticket in HH. It was well known at
RH> the time that the town was a speed trap.

SD> Oh yeah, Harker Heights is bad for speeding tickets. I'd run people
SD> over there as I was one of the few junior enlisted to have a car at
SD> the time to get booze since Killeen is in a dry county. After looking
SD> at a map of the Killeen area, I realized that the town I was talking
SD> about was Nolanville, Texas, not

Could have been Nolanville (as Wikipedia claims) but in the mid 80s, HH
had the reputation.

SD> A quote from Wikipedia about Nolanville: "At one point in the 1970s,
SD> because of its reputation as a speed trap, the commanding general of
SD> Fort Hood declared Nolanville off-limits to all military personnel.
SD> Maps of routes around Nolanville were posted in all company offices."
SD> I just looked up "top 10 speed traps in Texas" using Google and found

 SD> http://tinyurl.com/63rbz2r (this is a PDF document)

SD> Turns out that between 2000-2008, a tiny town (only 211 residends)
SD> named Westlake, which looks like a northeastern suburb of Fort Worth,
SD> put out a whopping 71,664 tickets with 81% of the tickets being
SD> speeding tickets. The total ticket revenue for the town was
SD> $8,919,460 with the total ticket revenue per citizen being $42,272 and
SD> total tickets per citizen being 340. Now if that isn't a moneymaker,
 SD> I don't know what is!

Some cops, seeing an out of area (state, county, whatever) license
plates wantingto make big bucks off the stranger. Looks like they did,
too.

SD> Interestingly enough, I didn't see Nolanville on there. Maybe they've
 SD> "flown under the radar"...

Probably because they've lost their reputation of being a speed trap.

RH> When we were in TX, our girls were at the age where they really liked
RH> corn dogs. We went to the Golden Corral a lot because it was
RH> affordable on a Spc4/Sgt pay; most of the time they ordered corn dogs.
RH> I tried making them once, just using my regular cornbread recipe as
RH> the batter and deep frying them. Didn't really work out that well; the
RH> batter kept slipping off the dogs. But, I tried. (G)

SD> Yeah, Golden Corral is good for having all sorts of interesting items
SD> on their buffet. My (now-ex) wife and I used to go to the one in
SD> Copperas Cove every so often to get cheap ribs and steak.

We lived in CC for the first 15 months or so we were at Fort Hood. Had
to rent a place off post because at the time, E4, under 2s couldn't get
post housing. They changed that rule after we'd been there about 6
months but it took almost a year to get housing. (We got it on West FH
where Steve worked.) Joined First Baptist Church, CC and kept out
membership there after moving on post. Lived on post for about 11 months
before moving to Frankfurt, West Germany.

SD> I have never attempted to make corn dogs myself, however, with the
SD> love I have of corn dogs and the high price to buy them in a store, I

Not being too much of a hot dog eater, I've never cared for corn dogs
either. Never bought any in the stores, just let the girls get them at
Golden Corral.

SD> should definitely look at making my own. Last Christmas my parents
SD> gifted Maura and me with a big 6-quart enameled cast iron Dutch oven
SD> so I have a good pan to do the deep frying in...mmm...sounds
SD> good...haven't had breakfast yet (late riser today).

You'll enjoy that Dutch oven, especially in colder weather. You can
brown meat for a stew in it, add everything else and pop it in the oven
on a low temperature, letting it cook all day. The meat comes out nice
and tender, everything else is done nicely too. We've done lamb shanks
in the Dutch oven--marinaded in Italian dressing, coated with a flour &
cheese mix and braised. They're good too, and after the initial few
minutes of work, they don't need any more attention except an
occaisional turning until time to serve. We introduced lamb to some of
our friends in Savannah by fixing it that way.

SD> Here's the only recipe I have in my Meal-Master about making corn dogs
 SD> (searching by title):

 SD> MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

 SD> Title: Corn Dog
 SD> Categories: Meats, Sandwiches
 SD> Yield: 6 Servings

 SD> 1/2 c Yellow corn meal
 SD> 1/2 c Flour
 SD> 1 t Dry mustard
 SD> 1/2 t Salt
SD> 1 ea Egg, lightly beaten
SD> 6 ea Skewers or sticks
 SD> 6 ea Frankfurters
 SD> 1 T Sugar
 SD> 1 t Baking powder
 SD> 1/2 c Milk
 SD> 1 T Melted shortening

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, wonder if Robert and Sarah would like them as much as
their mom and aunt used to. (G)
