GJ> There is a section for retired engineers, who periodically go off to
GJ> play with "heritage listed" machines, but I think that only applies to
 GJ> machines in Australia.
 ML> I'd imagine that heritage listing was effective only in Australia;
ML> it might be interesting for you to restore a device that you had
ML> built half a century ago, though.

There have been instances of elderly engineers restoring machines that
their fathers had built.

Quite recently I saw a trailer cable drum carrier that I designed for
the Electricity Trust of SA in 1954. It was still being used to carry
a 2 tonne drum. That was gratifying.

GJ> Opal is pretty, but soft, so to preserve opal jewellery it has to be
GJ> protected with a hard, transparent cover.

ML> And, oddly, to be soaked in water at intervals, the color
ML> coming from some weird interaction between the quartz
 ML> crystals and the water.

I hadn't heard of the desirability of soaking in water, but only NOT
to let triplets get soaked, lest they split apart.

ML> Funny going to a Muslim country for cheap alcohol.
GJ> Although there are more Muslims in Indonesia than in any other
GJ> country, it also has many Buddhists, Christians and Hindus, and is
 GJ> generally religiously tolerant.

 ML> Not reliably so, unfortunately.

Although my experiences in Indonesia have all been favourable, others'
have not, but that could apply in any country these days.

GJ> Recently there has been a fuss locally about inhumane animal treatment
GJ> in Indonesian slaughter houses, and a call to stop the export of live
GJ> cattle and sheep from Australia. As local Muslim clerics have pointed
GJ> out, there is no Islamic religious reason for such poor treatment. On
GJ> the contrary. The quality of the meat would suffer as result of cruel
GJ> treatment of the animals prior to killing.

ML> I had this discussion, sort of, with some epicures, and
ML> it was noted that hunted meat can taste very good indeed.
ML> The best deer meat I ever had was from a white-tail that
ML> had been entangled overnight in a barbed-wire fence and
ML> then mercy shot - there must have been some pretty
ML> intense pain and terror in that meat.

Interesting. I was told by the manager of the Vanuatu abattoir when I
worked there that adrenalin from a violent death toughened the meat.
She had done some experiments with a device which passed an electric
current through the meat after killing, which was supposed to
tenderise it, but I don't think that was used any more. She preferred
to be nice to the animals, right up to the stun gun. The beasts were
then strung up by the hind legs and the head cut off while it was
still unconscious, so that the heart pumped the blood out. The
animals to be sent to Fiji were Halal killed by slaughtermen who had
been trained in Malaysia to say the right prayers before using the
Halal-reserved stun gun.
