 -> $cumca$t does stand-alone cable internet service. I just got a flyer
-> from the local gang of thieves offering U$26/mo + U$10/mo modem fee.
-> Of course you can buy a modem for around U$35 to 40. But, few bother.
-> I own one as I took a brief flyer with cable internet service ... and
-> found that for throughput on the stuff that I download/stream my DSL
-> from Maw Bell (AT&T) is faster overall.

-> Seems that $cumca$t "throttles" the throughput on content that competes
-> with what they offer on their pay tee-vee channels - which also means
-> that they are monitoring my internet usage. And that just bites the bitter
 -> carrot. So, forkem.

RH> That's one I've never seen, but then I've never had cable internet.
RH> Right now I'm on a FIOS connection. It ain't cheap, but it works and I
RH> don't have to deal with the Cable monopoly. I am however dealing with
RH> AT&T, who when they were SNET were great, but that's been bought out
RH> twice with dips in customer service quality each time.

I wish Maw Bell would wire my town for FIOS - I'd jump in a Sarasota second.
They are doing some fibre - but only in new (and high $$$) sub-divisions. If we
ever get fibre where I can afford to live I expect we'll see Ol' Scratch on ice
skates soon after.

My original DSL contract was with Illinois Bell (one of the "Baby Bells" from
the break-up of AT&T by gummint anti-trust regulators) which morphed into
Ameritech with the addition of Michigan Bell, Indiana Bell and (I think) one
other in the region. That, in turn was usurped by Southern Bell (SBC) which was
on a campaign to roll-up and dominate US telecommunications. Eventually SBC
bought the remnants of AT&T (including the name and logo) which then gobbled up
Cingular and re-branded it as AT&T. Hopefully justice (Department of) will
prevail and the bailiff will whack their pee-pee and break them up again for
monopolistic practices. Before ... never mind - I was about to get into
politics and the party which worships profits and bottom lines before common
sense.

-> satellite communication. To combat this Galil (G-Tech) uses very high power
-> satellite transmitters which can burn through a lot of cloud cover.
-> Yeah, they're the same folks who got their start providing arms to the
-> Israeli army - and have evolved into high tech electronic, satellite and
-> medical fields. And sometimes, like if you live out in the boonies, too far
-> from a central phone office for DSL and out where the Cable TV providers
-> don't go - satellite is the only hope for broadband.

RH> I don't think he's that far out, but it's a thought. They may have
RH> improved service in the past few years, but I had a friend in North
RH> Carolina who lost service every time a storm hit. A lot of it probably
RH> has to do with the installer as much as it does with the equipment. It
 RH> usually does.

Installation is key. The dish and LNB and transmit antenna *must* be at least
seven feet in the air as the transmitter is high enough power that if you stand
in front of it when it is transmitting it can cook your grits. We used a 3 1/2"
schedule 80 tube with 4 feet of the tube anchored in the ground in 8 bags of
Quikcrete in a bell-shaped hole - so that bad boy was not going anywhere. Nor
was it going to quiver in a high wind, etc.
