============================
Hi Michael,

RH> We try to call (or Skype) them on a somewhat regular basis, just to
RH> check in. They are OK with Skype in but I don't think they've ever
RH> tried making a call with it.

ML> I am too technologically challenged to use Skype, too -
ML> not to mention that sound is disabled on the computer.

We have been using it for some time. It's really good for keeping in
touch with our daughters and their kids. Sarah and Robert don't have the
nebulous "who's that voice on the telephone?" problem identifying
grandparents that even Rachel and Deborah did. Last month we got an
enthusiastic "Gammagampa!" from Sarah when we walked into the house.
It's also good for doing somewhat of a physical check on our parents;
Rachel has commented various times on how well they look (or don't
look/sound) when Skyping them.

ML> Since we are in fairly frequent contact,
RH> I'm not concerned. OTOH, if we tried calling and got no answer (or not
RH> seein dad on line), I'd be concerned.

 ML> Indeed.

Since we know my parents basic routines, we know when to plan calls.
We're fairly much aware of medical appointments or whatever that may
have them away from home. Mealtimes are also pretty much known times so
we don't call then.

RH> Grand total of 7 classmates (of 220+/-) showed up at my 35th college
 RH> reunion last year.

ML> Do they not make a thing of the 35th? At mine they had a big
ML> shebang, but it may be a local cultural thing; perhaps it's

No, not much emphasis is given to it. The classes celebrating reunions
of increments of 5 and 10 years are acknowledged, with more emphasis on
the 10 year ones after the 25th year. We had a decent turn our for the
25th, the first one Steve and I made.

ML> because they figure we're going to be captains of industry
ML> or whatever by our 35th but retired and relatively pinchpenny
ML> by our 40th. 50th of course is something to celebrate in and
ML> of itself, mere survival being a triumph.

Yes, and the 50 year class does get the most honor. I was able to see
one professor I knew (he and his wife were class advisors, had her [now
deceased] as an instructor) and one professor's wife I knew in the 50
year class. I had her husband as an instructor as well. There was a
banquet for the 40 and above classes; the rest had a pizza party (more
suited for the younger classes) on Saturday night.

RH> Ice is probably there if you want it but I'm somewhat skeptical of it
RH> if I don't know how pure the water is. We skip ice at a lot of places,
RH> having read of water lines to the ice maker being contaminated in
 RH> different ones.

ML> That's just as true over here. In a case of stereotypic thinking,
ML> I'd tend to trust the Germans at least as much as the Americans
ML> in this regard (but perhaps not the Italians or Greeks!).

It's here in the states that I very often skip the ice. If the drink is
cold enough in the machine, there's really no need for it. Besides, a
lot of places give you so much ice, there's not too much room for the
drink. Get more drink without ice (but drive down their profit margin).

 ML> Title: Broiled Eggplant Parmigiana
 ML> Categories: Italian, Vegetables, Lo-cal
 ML> Servings: 6

Not nearly as decedant as mine. (G) Tonight I'm going to flour, egg wash
and crumb coat some eggplant slices, then fry them but not do them into
parmigiana. That will be the most time consuming part of supper; the
rest will be a simple lettuce and tomato salad, marinaded carrots,
steamed green beans (probably with butter) and rice. Cleaning out
perishables from the fridge.

Catch you later,
Ruth
