The study of waiting room magazines can be quite revealing of the
doctor's interests.  My local GP has the usual "Womens' Weekly" type
of mags, and some more interesting medical periodicals describing all
sorts of pathological conditions in gory detail.  Sometimes, if I have
to wait for long enough I can find out the latest info on treating my
ailments, so don't really need the doctor.

When I get to the specialists' rooms, a different class of magazines
is available, reflecting their financial status.  On occasions I have
come across the "Audi Owner", "BMW World" and similar, but also some
like, "Private Aircraft Owner", and catalogues of luxury ocean
cruising yachts.  What are of more interest to me are, "Wine Review"
and various "Gourmet" magazines.

  Let me tell ya, Burt, you have not had popcorn until you've tried
  Gourmet Individually Hand-Popped Popcorn.  Each kernel is
  individually clipped into long-handled forceps and held carefully
  over a single hot hickory ember until it pops. Then the very edges of
  the fluffy white floret of corn is delicately highlighted with melted
  butter brushed on using imported red sable brushes.  As a final step,
  each kernel is garnished with seven crystals of the best
  finely-ground Mediterranean sea salt, carefully placed one at a time
  with tweezers. As each piece of popcorn is prepared, it is brought to
  the table centered on a linen-covered silver tray (the linen is of
  course changed between each serving.)
  
  Mind you, this level of perfection doesn't come cheaply - three
  dollars a kernel, normally - but Maryanne and I had a coupon.
