GJ> I believe that there is a liaison between computer manufacturers and
GJ> program writers so that the latter deliberately add to respectable,
GJ> functioning programs, totally unnecessary pretty pictures, bells and
GJ> whistles that require greater memory and computing power to run. Then
GJ> the manufacturers suddenly come out with their latest whiz-bang model
GJ> to suit, and they all make lots of money.

Believe what you like. You will anyway.

DD> You haven't been paying attention, Geln. Just as XXX porn drove the
DD> home video industry to new technological heights, gamers have driven
 DD> the confuser industry
DD> to where it is today. All (without exception) cutting edge hardware is
DD> built and optimised to run the latest "Zap them hooligans" or "Crash
DD> that car" or "Slap that pinball" iteration.

GJ> As I replied to MLoo near the front of this posting, I have concluded
GJ> that over and above the gamers are the sales people who persuade the
GJ> gamers that they need more realism and inter-action, so they are the
GJ> ones who request the production of better bells and whistles by the
GJ> engineers. Then the sales people, who are really the main money
GJ> makers, are able to convince the gamers that last year's whiz-bangs
GJ> are out of date and only purchase of the new ones would enable them to
GJ> maintain social superiority over their friends. Thus have the games
GJ> progressed from Pacman and Dungeons played from the keyboard.

Here's how it works in the real world ... Gamer says "Gee, it would be neat if
... " and then his friends join in the clangor. Soon, someone in product design
and engineering hears that cacophony and decides to quiet the whines. And a new
"feature" is born. Soon thereafter all the "cutting edge" types (beta testers
for free) have the new feature and are crying back to the makers about "this
doesn't work when I ... " or "this breaks on ... ".

So, the manufacturer corrects the fault(s) and issues a production model,
announcing it though the columnists in the gamer mags, the grapevine,
wired.com, etc. Then the gamers egg each other on with "You're still on that
antique stuff? DUDE!" And the "antique stuff" is six months old. Bv(=

All the sales people have to be is clerks - the gamers will sell themselves on
their "need" for the latest and greatest. Meanwhile confusers optimised for
gaming are going in the $1K to $1.5K range and perfectly respectable machines
with more modest processors, video cards and storage can be had w/monitor for
less than U$400 (complete with Micro$not's latest whiz-bang OS).

You can believe what you will. I was actually in the business of owning and
running a computer store and speak from actual experience.

DD> The mundane business apps coming along in the wake of all of this with
DD> enhanced graphics, sound and FX is merely a side benefit of the latest
 DD> gamer's delight.

DD> If it were strictly business and productivity we would still be
DD> dealing with huge mainframe confusers and monochrome screens with
DD> little or no graphics ... like back in the mid-70s.

GJ> I think the computers would still have shrunk, as result of military
GJ> requirements. OK, so I have to admit that real wars are little
GJ> different from game wars, as far as the electronics goes.

It's called progress, Glen.

DD> It's gamers who are driving, also, the upcoming virtual reality gear
DD> that lets you put on your computer, projects the (3-D) images onto the
DD> insides of goggle which you wear, pumps stereo (or better) sound
DD> directly into your ear-buds and takes it's input from the tactile
DD> gloves or suit which you wear. Coming soon (already in development) are
DD> smell-o-vision, taste-o-vision, etc. And damned near as good as
DD> reality. Oh, and the leaders in this development ... scientists
DD> in that little country surrounded by religious enemies - Israel.

GJ> Really? How come Israel is still so dependent on US finance? And why
GJ> did these smart devices come out of Sony and other Japanese houses,
GJ> and not from Tel Aviv?

One takes funding from where it can be found. So, what does that have to do
with anything?

You do understand how R&D works, do you not? A clever R&D lab will licence
their product to damned near anyone for actual production. Sony may be big in
the Antipodes - but, they pretty much suck hind teat in the US ... along with
much of the rest of Japanese technology.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Israeli Salad
 Categories: Salads, Vegetables, Citrus, Squash
      Yield: 6 servings

      3 md Cucumbers
      3 lg Ripe tomatoes
1 lg Green or red bell pepper
      3 Green onions
           Olive oil
           Lemon juice
           Salt
           Zaatar (hyssop spice)

The secret to a really good Israeli salad is finely chopped
vegetables. Of course, your salad is also guaranteed to be a
success if you live in Israel and can get really fresh
cucumbers and tomatoes from the shuk (outdoor market).

Chop the vegetables in small pieces. The secret to a really
good Israeli salad is finely chopped vegetables.

Immediately before serving, season lightly with olive oil,
  lemon juice, salt and zaatar.
