-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> I believe that there is a liaison between computer manufacturers and
GJ> program writers so that the latter deliberately add to respectable,
GJ> functioning programs, totally unnecessary pretty pictures, bells and
GJ> whistles that require greater memory and computing power to run. Then
GJ> the manufacturers suddenly come out with their latest whiz-bang model
GJ> to suit, and they all make lots of money.

DD> Believe what you like. You will anyway.

I am always prepared to listen to other people's arguments before
dismissing them out of hand...

DD> You haven't been paying attention, Geln. Just as XXX porn drove the
DD> home video industry to new technological heights, gamers have driven
 DD> the confuser industry

GJ> that over and above the gamers are the sales people who persuade the
GJ> gamers that they need more realism and inter-action, so they are the
GJ> ones who request the production of better bells and whistles by the
GJ> engineers. Then the sales people, who are really the main money

DD> Here's how it works in the real world ... Gamer says "Gee, it would be
DD> neat if ... " and then his friends join in the clangor. Soon, someone
 DD> in product design
DD> and engineering hears that cacophony and decides to quiet the whines.
 DD> And a new
DD> "feature" is born. Soon thereafter all the "cutting edge" types (beta
DD> testers for free) have the new feature and are crying back to the
 DD> makers about "this doesn't work when I ... " or "this breaks on ... ".

DD> So, the manufacturer corrects the fault(s) and issues a production
DD> model, announcing it though the columnists in the gamer mags, the
DD> grapevine, wired.com, etc. Then the gamers egg each other on with
DD> "You're still on that antique stuff? DUDE!" And the "antique stuff" is
 DD> six months old. Bv(=

I suppose that is how it is done in Japan, China, USA and similar. I
do not recall hearing of any games being produced here.

DD> All the sales people have to be is clerks - the gamers will sell
DD> themselves on their "need" for the latest and greatest. Meanwhile
DD> confusers optimised for gaming are going in the $1K to $1.5K range and
DD> perfectly respectable machines with more modest processors, video cards
DD> and storage can be had w/monitor for less than U$400 (complete with
 DD> Micro$not's latest whiz-bang OS).
DD> You can believe what you will. I was actually in the business of
DD> owning and running a computer store and speak from actual experience.

So I have you (or your Australian equivalent) to blame for all the
advertising junk jammed into my letter box! The large game sellers
here compete against each other to lure the teenagers in.

DD> If it were strictly business and productivity we would still be
DD> dealing with huge mainframe confusers and monochrome screens with
DD> little or no graphics ... like back in the mid-70s.
GJ> I think the computers would still have shrunk, as result of military
GJ> requirements. OK, so I have to admit that real wars are little
GJ> different from game wars, as far as the electronics goes.

 DD> It's called progress, Glen.

When I worked in the Defence industry in 1958 or so, one of my first
jobs was to design the airconditioning for a computer, the purpose of
which was to plot the likely point of impact of the first stage of a
British test ICBM if the motor should cut out at any point during its
test flight down the range. If that point was outside the test area,
the computer had to send a signal to the rocket to blow it up. As it
happened, that "Digital Impact Predictor" (DIP) never had to send the
signal, but it had to be there, just in case. That computer was 10
feet long, 6 feet high and 2 feet thick, and its dedicated air
conditioning was duplicated, just in case. It only had to operate for
about 3 minutes each test flight. Definitely a case of over-kill!

I think the power of that mighty machine was about the same as my
mobile phone.

DD> gloves or suit which you wear. Coming soon (already in development) are
DD> smell-o-vision, taste-o-vision, etc. And damned near as good as
DD> reality. Oh, and the leaders in this development ... scientists
DD> in that little country surrounded by religious enemies - Israel.
GJ> Really? How come Israel is still so dependent on US finance? And why
GJ> did these smart devices come out of Sony and other Japanese houses,
GJ> and not from Tel Aviv?

DD> One takes funding from where it can be found. So, what does that have
 DD> to do with anything?

I would have thought that the originators of those developments would
have made so much money from their bright ideas that they could help
out USA - or are they doing just that with their ideas?

DD> You do understand how R&D works, do you not? A clever R&D lab will
DD> licence their product to damned near anyone for actual production. Sony
DD> may be big in the Antipodes - but, they pretty much suck hind teat in
DD> the US ... along with much of the rest of Japanese technology.

Just about everything electronic here is Japanese designed and sold
under Sony, Sanyo, Canon, Epson, but made in low wage countries like
Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China.
