Ärende: Life, one day at a time [1]
====================================================================
Hi Hap,

 hn> Good Mawnin Miz Ruth!

And a good evening to you, Mr. Newsom

-> hn> No travelling for us this year...I am

-> No surprise but it would be nice if Anne felt well enough to make a trip
-> to California.

 hn> Even if she feels up to it we won't be
 hn> able to go with the schedule she's on for
 hn> treatments. And I confess to being
 hn> Ultra concerned about her being exposed
 hn> to germs in her immune weakened state.

Sigh! I know the feeling but you need an escape every so often. Guess
it's a good thing Amanda is getting home more often to provide some sort
of a break. Good for her to get out of her workaholic rut too.

-> hn> thinking about maybe taking Anne to
-> hn> a nice hotel (maybe in Seattle or
-> hn> down to the Oregon coast) for a weekend
-> hn> one of these days...just a get away and
-> hn> some quiet time somewhere we can
-> hn> just sit and relax.

-> Nice to have those times. I've tried to pull Steve out of his books for
-> a day trip out of the area at least once a semester. It worked th first
-> semester but not the subsequent 3. Maybe this upcoming one will be more
-> successful. We visited an outlet mall an hour or so away, hit up a
-> kitchenware store or two and got me some sweaters.

 hn> The sell sweaters at kitchenware stores now?? (grin)

Yes, but not the kind you could wear. After all, isn't cooking onions on
a low, slow heat known as sweating them? And, whatever they're in is a
sweater, isn't it? (G)

-> hn> canning for the three of us and quarts
-> hn> were better for that. Never canned
->  hn> tomatoes though.

-> Canning tomatoes is dead easy. Scald, core and slip skins. Stuff into a
-> jar, leave half an inch of headspace. Cap, process in pressure cooker (5
-> pounds of pressure) for 10 minutes. A teaspoon of salt per quart can be
-> added but not necessary.

 hn> Up here we never grew enough tomatoes
 hn> for me to spend any time canning them.

That's why I bought--half a bushel, Amish raised, for $6.00. Good deal,
especially since the deer are enjoying ours. We've been able to eat 2
small ones out of the dozens we've seen started.

 hn> Most were eaten fresh..and a few were
 hn> dehydrated for "sundried" tomatoes..

I usually just buy a bag of those as needed.

-> hn> Yeah...it tastes like chicken breast meat (grin)!

-> Unseasoned breast meat. OTOH, seasoned is good.

 hn> As is seasoned Tofu!

True, as long as the seasonings are compatable with each other. Some
folks might just dump in anything to season it, without paying attention
to what they are adding.

-> hn> Time is fun when you're having flies!

-> That's older'n the hills.

 hn> Yeup...and almost as old as me!

But older than I am.

-> hn> start the second round of chemo; once
->  hn> a week for 12 weeks...THEN the radiation.
 hn> ->
-> And by then, hopefully all the nasty cells will be deader'n dead. Nice
-> thing about radiation--Anne can lie down (and maybe even take a short
-> nap) on the table while being treated. She'll also become a tatooed
-> lady. (G)

 hn> I'm hoping she tolerates it well...

Radiation or the tatooes? The former is rougher than the latter. She
will probably want loose fitting tops that touch as little skin in some
areas as possible. Good chance she will get at least a "sum burn" from
it, maybe some more intense burning. Extreme fatigue is another side
effect; this one can last years. I still have times when I'll have to
quit whatever I'm doing and rest--and I finished my treatments 3 1/2
years ago. You need patience; time will help but sometimes the time
really drags. Celebrate the end of each week of treatment and each phase
of treatment; set a goal (concert, show, what have you) that you want to
mark, even if it's a relatively minor one. It may end up being a major
marker; you just don't know ahead of time. But, keep putting one foot in
front of the other and repeat as often as needed.

-> hn> Biggest thing to me was she was so
-> hn> nasty and I mean NASTY to the nurses
-> hn> who were giving her the Chemo...poor girls

-> Don't think it was karma but those workers have so much patience and
-> concern for their patients. They put up with a lot of flack but don't
-> let it show. It's the sweet folks that more than make up for the tigers
-> that make their job rewarding.

 hn> I certainly know I could not do it!

You would be surprised what you could do if you had to--ask Steve about
changing my infection dressing.

-> hn> Check and see if there's anyone selling
-> hn> boiled peanuts at the game!!

-> They had peanuts; have to ask the family we went with if they were
-> boiled or not. Seemed to be roasted, hard shelled. Steve & I split a bag
-> Montgomery Biscuits, lost 6-4 but had a few good plays.

 hn> Too bad you didn't get to see them play
 hn> the Jackson Generals...they are an AA
 hn> team in the Mariners organization and
 hn> seem to be really doing well this year!

Maybe next time. We never went to a Savannah Sand Gnats game, just too
hot in the summer there. That or work or some other things kept us away.
