I was trying to find some acetone to taste (my recollection
is from the 1950s) but no sucess. Where have you tasted
acetone lately?

Almost. It's not such a great leap of faith when you
consider what rosemary tastes like.

And yet you are sinking deeper into the cellar with the new
team. Disheartening. There are a couple teams with a worse
record than you, though. Three, I just looked it up -
Baltimore, K.C., and Houston, traditional powerhouses all.

Historic Bowman Field (that's what they call it, with the word
Historic everywhere), is supposedly the second oldest minor-league
park in use, but what the oldest one is is up to some discussion.

It was supposed to be nice out, clear and coolish, perfect for a
game, and the Crosscutters, Philadelphia's class A farm team,
were at home to play the Valley Cats, the Houston Astros affiliate
from up Troy. The team site gave us two important pieces of info
- there is handicap-accessible seating in the general admission
area and this evening was Food Bank night - give up a surplus
can from your larder, and you get in for a buck. So for two
cans of corn (plus some outdated Carroll Shelby chicken chili
mix thrown in because of Annie's largesse) and two bucks we got
two places in a handicap box just behind the box seats (of
which there are about 5 rows) and watched a pretty decent game.
After a shaky start, both teams settled down, and the quite
expertly played contest ended with the home team winning -
the final: Williamsport 3, Tri-Cities 1. Unfortunately, it
turns out both Auburn and Mahoning Valley also won, so the
Cutters remain in a tie for second.

During the game, Billy downed an apparently decent hot dog
and some pretty good fries, while I had a generous and probably
homemade pulled pork sandwich that was almost a bargain for the
$4.25 and that had a big knot of fat and gristle in the middle.
Genny beer is available for $3.50 (20 oz) or 5.50 (quart), so
Billy ended up with 96 oz, I with 80. The girl behind the
counter recognized me but continued to sell me beers without
demur, so I could have drunk 176 oz and perhaps more during
the game had I so wished. If you are mathematically inclined,
you can see that getting a big beer conveys an advantage of
3/10 of a cent per ounce.

      Title: Cranberry Raspberry Ice Cream **
 Categories: Ice cream, Desserts, Freezer
   Servings:  1

      1 c  Milk                               16 oz Cran-raspberry sauce
    1/3 c  Sugar                               1 c  Light cream
    1/4 ts Salt                              1/2 ts Vanilla
      1    Egg

  In small saucepan, heat milk until warm. Stir in sugar and salt until
  dissolved. In a bowl, beat egg. Stir small amount of warm mixture into
  beaten egg; return to warm mixture, stirring constantly. Cook and stir over
  low heat for 5 min. Chill. In large bowl, break up cran-rapsberry sauce
  with a fork; stir in egg mix, cream and vanilla. Pour into 2-qt metal
  container of ice cream maker. Process according to manufacturer's
  directions. Makes 1 quart.
   NOTE: Can be made by pouring into freezer trays; place in freezer for 2
  hours. Beat well in chilled bowl, cover and return to freezer. Repeat
  beating again in 2 hours. Re-freeze after each beating. Cover tray closely
  each time.
