Ärende: CYCLING GAMES 10820
===========================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

 GJ> games commemorating famous cyclists.

DD> I know there is a Jesse Johnson game or three ... but, he's not a
DD> cyclist in the context of Lance Armstrong - he's a BMX racer and stunt

I would expect such a sport to be very suited to computer games.

DD> rider. Lance Armstrong is featured in almost all the the Bicycle Team
 DD> Manager games released
DD> during the period(s) he was competing. There is also a Lance Armstrong
DD> game available on the Nike web site.

Perhaps one of your games creators would find it worthwhile to produce
a Cadel Evans game for sale to Australians.

DD> So, what happens in Bangladesh in the middle of monsoon with no sun
DD> for extended periods and the battery goes flat? The big "wind farm"
DD> installations are hooked into a grid. A solar powered battery with no
DD> solar is about as useful as an oil lamp with no fuel.

GJ> Although the sun may disappear for extended periods in some benighted
GJ> parts of your continent, in countries closer to the equator it rises
GJ> every morning, without fail. During monsoon seasons there is still
GJ> light, which although not as bright as during the dry seasons, it is
GJ> still sufficient to charge batteries. Perhaps you are confusing solar
GJ> electric cells with solar water heaters, which are more affected by
 GJ> clouds and overcast.

 DD> No, I'm not.

In that case you should know that while there is light, even overcast,
some electricity is generated by solar panels. OTOH, solar water
heaters are almost useless when rain is falling on them.

DD> That's why they are hooked into an electric grid. Even an engineer
DD> ought to be able to come to grips with that concept.

GJ> Of course, which is why wind turbines cannot replace fossil fuel
GJ> generators, but merely supplement them. The larger the grid, the
GJ> better, which is why there are plans for a huge one, covering most of
GJ> Europe and northern Africa, incorporating coal, geo-thermal, nuclear,
GJ> hydro, wind and solar sources of power. The Sahara is very big on
 GJ> solar capacity.

DD> Spain/Portugal/France have some big solar reflectors heating sodium
DD> which then powers electric generating turbines. Quite impressive -- and
DD> as the sodium retains its heat fairly well the generators work well

Salt is used as the heated medium in concentrating solar power (CSP)
plants, not metallic sodium. The Spanish plants use hundreds of
smaller (house-sized) mirrors on their 250 MW plant.

DD> after sundown. As well, the Frogs are working with tidal generators
DD> which use the tidal currents (both up and down) to generate EMF.

Also Bristol's Marine Current Turbines and a consortia at present
working on "underwater windmills" in the Bay of Fundy.

The sea can also provide a source of steady power, with the Ocean
Thermal Energy Conversion process, using the temperature difference of
20 to 25 C between the surface of the sea and at 1000 metres depth in
tropical regions. In 1981 Japan demonstrated a 31 kW shore-based
plant on Nauru, and a 13 MW plant is planned for the US military,
probably at Diego Garcia. Another sea power which can be used is
steady currents, such as flow between the Australian mainland and
Tasmania.

Intermittent generation can be teamed with customers who can regulate
demand to suit generated power levels, such as water desalination.

GJ> the reactors. Australia has some ideal locations for perpetual
GJ> storage, far from any habitations, where the spent fuel could reside
GJ> in peace until economical methods of re-processing can be devised, or
GJ> humanity destroys itself, whichever comes first.

DD> I am not sanguine as to the prospects of the continued survival of the
 DD> human species, long term.

On a geological time scale, human existence is likely to be no more
than a brief flash.

 GJ> "What is truth?"
DD> Beats the hell out of me Mr. Pilate

An unfortunate public servant forced to get involved in local
religious squabbles about which he knew little, so he passed the buck
and decision to his advisers. I wonder what happened to him in later
years? Did he get a pension or the axe?
