============================
Hello, Mike.

Sunday September 12 2010 at 22:37, you wrote to me:

MR> Heheheh, Yeah I guess You could say, Life causes cancer. My sister
MR> just lost her 21 year old daughter to it. That disease sucks. 21 and
MR> beat it once, only to have it come back again. I am just guessing as
MR> nobody knows, but try to find a reason. I believe we have our own
MR> little Love Canal by One of Kodaks big complex's. They say they are
MR> studying it. I truly believe those growing up in that neighborhood may
MR> have something to worry about. She lived there 19 years. You can smell
MR> the chemicals all the time when near there.

I'm sorry to hear that happened; it's even more difficult when you lose someone
so close so young. I do understand about the chemicals. About 20 miles north
of me is the world headquarters of Eastman Chemical Corporation (they're the
"Eastman" in Eastman-Kodak). The minute you hit town you smell that nasty,
acrid, sour and foul smell that always seems to eminate from Eastman. What's
really creepy that since the Eastman campus runs for about three miles along
the south fork of the Holston River, I'm not sure how clean that river is...and
people /still/ fish and go tubing in it!

My wife says she expects to catch Blinky (the three-eyed fish that lives near
Mr. Burns' nuclear power plant in "The Simpsons") if she ever went fishing
there. ;)

MR> Doesn't that make You wonder though? When the water is brown? I know,
MR> rust or something. But still I am not sure I would be comfortable
MR> drinking it. I remember as a Kid we would be playing baseball at one
MR> of my friends house on a hot summer afternoon. We lived in the
MR> country. We would be so hot and dehydrated we could not take it
MR> anymore, we would rather go to the Creek near the ball field and drink
MR> rather than drink from his house, the water was so bad. I know,
MR> thinking back it was stupid. But that house water was undrinkable. At
MR> least in our Minds 8)

The water's brown because of ancient water mains around here. It doesn't
happen a lot-moreso in winter-but it's definitely off-putting when it does.
That's why I filter the water if I'm going to drink it. I'm very careful when
it comes to drinking out of streams. In the late 80s, I lived just outside of
Portland, Oregon, in a small valley with a lovely stream in it. One of the
neighborhood kids drank from the creek and got giardia (sp?), a very nasty
parasite. He still struggles with the infection and it's been twenty years
now.

MR> Oh Yeah! Gotta be Ice cold... Something about it! :)

Water tastes funny to me when it's warm. :)

MR> Yeah, that is what the diabetic nurse used to teach me.. 60 a meal.
MR> Now I generally pick foods that give me a little more than that for
 MR> the day.

I have to be careful. I broke down and bought a pint of chocolate milk and
drank the whole thing. 60 carbs right there. I treated that as my lunch.

MR> I hear Ya My friend, been there. That is the wierdest thing being
MR> hungry when your BS is high. I found with me, it is kind of what I was
MR> saying to Nancy. Your BS stays high and Your cells become insulin
MR> resistant and then you can't use the sugar to for energy, and You feel
MR> Hungry. And You know being diabetic. Eating is not the answer, as no
MR> matter how much you eat, Your body can't use the sugar so it stays in
MR> the blood. Not how I first understood diabetes, of course I did not
 MR> understand it at all.

The worst part is that it's so difficult to ignore. Your natural instincts are
to eat when you're hungry and when you try to ignore it, it's even worse. I
really didn't consider that angle until recently, so I'm working on just
drinking water in between meals (I don't snack so often these days since income
is limited :).

MR> Yeah Man, You got Your whole life ahead of You. You can't change
MR> things overnight either. You just got to keep plugging away until old
MR> habits, attitudes etc. are replaced with the new.

It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it.

MR> I always laugh at how the Young ones ( teens and even college kid
MR> age) think they are so invincible, then I remember and You probably
MR> do to, but You are younger than I, so it is hitting You now. You just
MR> hit a point where You realize it just ain't so. We are not invincible
MR> and in some cases, like My neice, we are down right fragile even at a
MR> Young age. <grin> But the good thing for You is, You can make some
MR> lifestyle changes that can spare You that bomb that has to hit so
MR> many of us before we realize. Good Luck and keep plugging away.

The head endocrinologist told me that I am standing at the top of a large,
steep hill and that I can turn around and walk down the gentle side of the hill
right now or fall down the steep side; it's all up to me. So I'm trying to
work on these things because when it comes to my health, I'm relatively young
to be having so many problems. I appreciate the good thoughts and I'm working
on it ever so slowly.

Now we should probably move this to netmail since we've long ago abandoned
cooking in this conversation. :P

MR> ... This door is Baroque, please call Bach later.

Gone Chopin, be Bach in a minuet!

Later,
Sean

... Let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
