There were also several things I didn't try, such as a very
picked-over-looking tray of tandoori chicken, and numerous
chutneys and sauces - I tried the onion one, which was bland
and tasted as though the onions had been cut on a cutting
board saturated with raw chicken juice, and the red capsicum
one, which was bland and salty.

Desserts were standard-issue and pretty good - sevian
(vermicelli boiled in milk), kheer (rice boiled in milk),
fruit pudding (some kind of light starch boiled in milk, colored
orange, and mixed with fruit cocktail), and carrot halwa (carrots
cooked dry but with butter and milk and a few raisins and nut
slivers) - though very sweet in the Indian style.

Taj Mahal beer came in the convenient 22 oz size. I was
selfish and didn't share; Dale and Gail both had mango lassi
and seemed pretty pleased.

It was time for me to cook, and as the temperature was in the 60s,
and there was a 99c special, I decided to make a roast chicken.
Convected the 7 lb bird for an hour, making sausage dressing on
the side and roast carrots. I used cheap (but nondairy!) white
bread and some sausage that was also on special along with two
onions, lots of sage, and a bit of thyme, marjoram, and oregano.
Also baked chickpeas in tomato sauce with rosemary in the Greek
style except for using just a film of olive oil rather than the
authentic lots of it; put in an onion and a little garlic - could
have further authenticized it by adding a sprinkle of feta, but
then I wouldn't have eaten it myself. Note to self: Giant brand
tomato sauce is very salty. Funny thing I noticed about the
Giant/S&S brand products. They're pretty much the same as before,
but sometimes the packaging lacks a brand name. This was true
of the white cranberry peach drink (23% juice) - just that silly
bowl of multicolored bananas logo.

I sacrificed crispy skin for almost falling apart tender meat.
If I were thinking ahead, I'd have taken the partially roasted
skin and rendered out the fat, making a dessert of cracklings.
This is what I do when alone, most of my first meal off a bird
being fried fat of some variety or other, plus a thigh or a wing.
The cooking yielded a large quantity of delicious juice, which
joined a pint and half of stock from the freezer to make a
flavorful gravy. (We were not wholly crackling deprived, as I
had made some out of fatty trimmings for an appetizer; also
cooked up the liver and gizzard for Dale and me).

Afterward, there was close to 3 lb of meat left, and the bones
went into the crockpot for stock, which smelled incredible in
the morning.

In the morning Gail and Dale took me to Burtonsville for the
bus to Silver Spring. We were 15 early, but it was a nice day,
and they had stuff to do, so I said goodbye to them and went
to the bus shelter where as luck would have it, in short order
I was accosted by an obviously lonely and obviously psychotic
drifter type. Made conversation with him for a while, and the
bus came. On arrival I steamed up the hill to the other bus
stop, but I missed my connection by 30 seconds - not an awful
thing, as Silver Spring, despite being gangland at night, is
safe enough during the day. Also, there are great places to
eat, but I didn't bother, as I had had leftover chicken and
stuffing and gravy for breakfast - a highly recommended meal.
